He was rabbiting on about cyclists on Clarendon St yesterday too.
I met him once on a staircase and had to reverse back to the landing to let him pass.

I stopped listening to his show because of the horse manure he went on with about cyclists. Tool.

George Hook is as informed on most subjects as he is on rugby. There are drunks down at my local that make more sense than him.

I read a recent article about Alfred Hitchcock that explained how to do an impression of the great man, which was mostly rolling your tongue against the back of your front teeth and affecting a cockney accent. Omitting the cockney accent, I find the process produces a reasonable George Hook impression. That last sentence is notable in that it contains the words "reasonable" and "George Hook".

That's what I thought when I read the title last night. I wondered what the OP was doing there so late at night :p

Did anyone actually listen to the piece. I mean it seems if anyone says anything about certain cyclists and yes the 2 said certain not all it seems to be anti bike. Have any of ye been hit by a speading bike while walking. Going the wrong way in a 1 way straight is stupid and going through red light is moronic (I am seeing more and more stop at red lights though).

I've never been hit by a speeding bike.

Off the top of my head I can't even think of a single anecdote from any of my friends or family of them being hit. (There was that one guy that I hit, but that was entirely his fault).

Have you ever been hit by a speeding cyclist?

    Basically:

    There are idiots that cycle
    There are idiots that drive
    There are idiots that walk
and there are idiots that run.

But you get these no matter what. A bit of common sense from all of us and we all get on fine.

Two of the most stupid things i seen are as follows:

A guy cycling in the dark in Phoenix park, I running the other way with a light on me and only for me having a light we would of crash, this was not on the cycle lane!

Another time I was driving on the road and saw this guy at the last second, out for a run on the side of the road, which is grand, but all in black!!

Some people are just naturally stupid.

I was sorry to see from your later post that you've been hit by a bicycle, it's a special breed of asshole that intimidates and harm pedestrians or any road user. It's not something most folk on here would consider acceptable in any shape or form. Similarly 'salmon cyclists' (wrong way against a one-way) and RLJers are generally not held in high-regard.

At the same time, most of us also object to broad labelling of cyclist behaviour. A significant number of us obey the rules of the road and just want to get around like everyone else. George Hook seems to have developed a bias against cyclists in that he even objects to cyclists track-standing while waiting at traffic lights which is largely why people have reacted against him.

So, I hope you're fully recovered from the incident and don't stick us all on the 'hook' for the abysmal behaviour of some :)

I am fine I don't tarnish all of ye. George does go OTT with it but whats does he not go OTT on. I do like his show though. George does like cyclists the ones from Amsterdam as he thinks they are curtious. It just seems on here that some have blinkers that bikers are great sure its only a bike and not a metal frame with an engine so what harm would we do. Some do believe that pedestrians should see them and get out of there way

I'm sure Hooky would know that Holland had the means and opportunity to build a cycling infrastructure from the ground up decades ago and had similar problems to Ireland at that time (ie, road user conflict ) and that it was prudent social policy to encourage more cycling rather than more cars. Several decades later, they have a sophisticated and enviable cycling culture, but its one that cannot happen overnight. Hooky would also know that most of his audience are folks sitting in cars in traffic on their way home, watching cyclists get home more efficiently and can be wound up pretty easily, something I'm sure his producers encourage.

Lol i stopped listening to George some time ago not because he is anti-cycling but because he is going senile and loves the sound of his own voice.

    News , comment and opinion except its all his opinion and any guest he brings on usually tries to butter him up rather debate and even if they wanted to he would talk over them aboue one of the following;
    1. Rugby
    2. Ingrid
    3. Cork
    4. Fine Gael
    5. Haiti (depending on the time of year)

Just be happy knowing that he is old and wont be long for this world.

ah Hook is harmless and youre all being too hard on him!

Mannix is actually pro cycling, but he has to deal with people giving out to him about some of the behavior of cyclists in the city so has to act on that. it would create more 'harmony' if all cyclists stopped at red lights and just behaved safely, there is a 'large' minority that are being asses, Im sayin this as someone who cycles in the city every day. if it was only a very few we would hear less complaints in the media about dangerous cyclists. its just gonna take a few years for everyone to adapt to cars not being number 1

I don't give a damn about that: every day, at every red light, I see cars driving thru them,, every day on the news, there this or that many pedestrians reported run over by cars and dead - we all know where the problem is, and the media choose to focus on something else. These 'accidents' are barely news. I call bull**** on that.

George was very lucky. Cyclists in Holland will happily cycle over you and then bollock you out of it for being run over.
I was hit (lightly) by a cyclist once because I stopped at a red light and he hadn't intended to. However, that was one incident in three decades and thousands of miles, so I haven't jumped to any conclusions about it. Unlike George.
