Do I need a PSU

    Hi Lads,
I friend mine has moved into a house with 2 uhf antennas on the roof, one directed a saorview DTT mast and another at an old south coast tv mast. There are what looks to be a masthead amp and masthead diplexer (2 boxes) connecting the antennas and there is one cable running down into the living room..

There is no signal whatsoever on a new saorview TV through this cable.. Would I be right and saying that I probably need to get a PSU and connect it up?

I can't really get access to the roof so It will have to be a guess.

    Thanks lads.
    I

Yes you are probably correct in your analysis. You should be able to pick up 12v psu cheap enough to try out.

Or maybe your new TV can output 5V up the cable. Read the manual with your Saorview TV and see if it can.

It will be in one of the menus.

is that what the 5v settings for on stbs? Is 5v enough power?

Not sure if 5v is sufficient, the normal psu for masthead amps outputs 12v.

Should be, as that is what it is for. The output from the masthead amp is only mV not Volts. Try it.

Depending on make of amp it can be 5, 9, 12, 14, 18V
far too much and the magic smoke comes out.
With digital a bit too little or much (i.e. 5V or 12V when it wants 9V) causes distortion that is no problem for Analogue, but hammers the "Quality" such that the picture pixelates slightly, breaks up, freezes or nothing even if signal level is perfect. Same if there is too much gain.

Ask the prievous owners for the power supply. It should have been left.
