Cleaning EGR Valve - Chemicals?

Just a quick one... a couple of videos on You Tube which talk through cleaning out the EGR valve mention some spray that is very effective at removing the carbon build-up and safe to use. Anyone know of what it might be called? Can't seem to find the video I was looking at now...
Or what chemicals if any do folk find effective for this task?

I used oven cleaner, it was quite good. Ovens have the same gunk: baked-on carbon.

Done mine with carb cleaner and a wire brush.

Cut the top off an old can and let it soak in the above for a while. Great stuff. I used carb cleaners, oven cleaner etc but nothing compared to this!

Is there the option of bypassing the EGR? Just before you go to the hassle of cleaning it.

I use an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner that Aldi / Lidl flogged some time back. Works really well although one has to be careful that only the mechanical (and not the electrical) parts of the valve get cleaned.

It's possible on some older cars to blank off the EGR valve, but the more modern stuff this isn't possible. In some cases, it would not be at all wise to blank off or interfere with the EGR's operation.

I'm aware of the issue's with bypassing EGR's. Just putting the option out there to the OP before he goes to the trouble of cleaning it.

Thanks for the replies. Carb cleaner seems to be the most popular alright, I thought that's what one guy in a video said alright but thought to myself that carb cleaner might be hard to come by these days!! Any motor factors should have it I assume?
Failing that, I'll try that Gunk Engine Degreaser!
Deleting EGR isn't an option I'm afraid!!

There is a proper cleaner for the ERG, DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE, YOU WILL DAMAGE THE EGR. CRC are the makers.
