Transfer to PhD - grant?

    Hi,

I am currently a Masters research student (started Sept 2011) and am receiving the higher Education grant (fees and maintenance). The grant is rewarded for a 2 year Masters, as this is what I applied for and am currently doing.

However, I am very keen to transfer to the PhD register and the county council does not seem to know what to do and does not want to give me an answer before I actually transfer.

Does anyone else have any experience of a similar situation? Should I be entitled to continue getting the fees paid and to receive the maintenance grant? Or do I have to apply as if I am a new student starting a new programme, in which case I will, at best, get the fees paid but not be entitled to the maintenace grant as they have stopped paying this for new postgrad applicants. It doesn't seem right, as I will not be a new student...

Anyone with experience or knowledge of these type of situations?
