Anyone know of an insurance company that will insure a second car in your own name for a holiday period. we have a second car which we like to drive down to the south of france & spain during the summer months and then not use till the following year. Its left hand drive and english reg.

I thought it was easy to obtain insurance for a few weeks cover for the likes of camper vans and classic cars etc?

I phoned our insurance and they said we couldnt insure a second car in our own name...hmmmmm?

Why not transfer your existing insurance?

    .......huh? what?

Absolute nonsense. Are you sure that's what they said?

I have insured 2 cars in my name before and know many people that have insured 2 or more cars (vintage,4x4, hobby, weekend, camper etc). Maybe you can't use your existing NCB on the second car (even though I think that's strange as well) but there should be no reason you couldn't insure a second car.

UK plates? You know Customs don't like them;)

There should be no problem switching insurance from one car to another for few weeks, and your bonus wouldn't be affected in this case.
Some insurers charge adminstration fee when doing this, so you have to pay it twice a year.
First you have to make sure you have your paperwork in order regarding UK car - not sure if it is true, but i heard insurance companies report those to Customs...

Strange or not, that is reality for most. Very few insurers will mirror your NCB in Ireland.

I know :( I found out the hard way.

Don't understand the logic though, I earned my NCB by not acting the maggot on the road and watching where I'm going, that's hardly going to change once I get into my weekend car is it?

Don't understand it either. I am not able to drive two cars at the same time, but insuring two would cost me fortune, since second car would be with no NCB applied.
Fire/theft part can be separated from policy, and 3rd party given NCB on as many cars as you have, since you can only drive one at the time. But our logic isn't the same as theirs.
