    Hey,

So I'm going to finally upgrade my monitor from a 19' 1440x900 to a 24' 1080p. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the best monitor to get for around €200 or less is? Where would be the best place to buy? Should I go for IPS?

    Cheers!

The Dell U2312HM is in your price range and is IPS. 1" smaller then what you want and I don't own it but I have heard good things about it.

Thanks for the reply, it looks like a nice monitor, although I'm not mad about the fact it doesn't have HDMI which would limit it's potential to connect to other devices. Would an IPS panel be fairly essential for the best image quality?

There is also the AOC i2353Fh which has got good reviews 23" ips dual hdmi but no dvi.

I've not had the chance to compare enough modern panels to advise on how important ips is.

Pc World actually sell that model, so you can call in for a look before buying.

Cheers lads, will definitely consider both monitors. Would the difference between a 23" and 24" monitor be worth the presumably more expensive price?

You want IPS. I have a U2412M beside a 22" TN panel. The difference is ridiculous. I'll never, ever, be buying a TN monitor again.

You can use a DVI->HDMI adapter. They're both digital signals so there's no fuss or loss of quality.

True but does make things easier if you have audio out on a monitor with hdmi.

LG D2343P 23 Inch 3D IPS Monitor VGA DVI HDMI.
1920 x 1080 has an audio output, under €189.99 bricks n mortar store.
    Excellent screen.

That seems like a great price considering you get the added bonus of 3D (not something I would have been interested in before but if it has the same tech as comparatively priced 2D monitors then why not!?, might be cool for games).

Can I ask where you can get these? I checked on Amazon UK and its around €225. It's gotten pretty great reviews there.

Also would I be better off waiting for the winter sales for a monitor or would there be much difference you reckon?

Is a TN Panel the same as TFT Panel?

    Edit:It is.

No TFT LCD can be TN, IPS,VA,IPS and I think there are a few other types of TFT LCD panel but I listed the main ones.

Well they have a few in stock in some of the stores. If none of them are near you maybe you can get it delivered?

Knowing Argos, it'll sit there on the site out of stock for the next few months.

This TV has been like this since first wk of November, I was looking for one back then.

It seems that delivery isn't available on it unfortunately. Might know someone who lives near one of the stores that could grab one for me though.

That's a big ass monitor you're looking for.

It's a fairly standard size these days. Lots of people are getting 27" monitors.

Yeah, my mate has a 24" and I think its the perfect size for a PC. Not too large for regular productivity tasks but large enough to comfortable enjoy a movie or play games on

I also have a 24" monitor. But I doubt anyone has a 24' monitor though :pac:

It seems I won't be able to get one of those monitors from Argos, any suggestions of where I could get one at a similar price? Amazon Germany have it for €170 (not including delivery), would they be likely to ship this to Ireland?

Edit: Turns out I was looking at the complete wrong monitor on Amazon, doh!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,387 ✭✭✭glynf

grimm2005, amazon.de do ship here, I have bought plenty off them including a few monitors. Best rule of thumb is if it is direct from amazon, they will ship & for reasonable money. Third party re-sellers on amazon maybe more expensive. I usually filter different sellers using the 'Deals with free delivery by Amazon.de'-this is usually amazon direct.

Just put the D2343P 58.4 cm (23-inch) monitor in my basket to see costs:

Article: EUR 176.73 (this is bumped up by higher Irish vat)
Packaging and delivery: EUR 11.03 (free shipping in Germany only)
    Total amount: EUR 187.76

So its do-able-Standard delivery 5-6 working days (apparently..)

What has a monitor got over a tv??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

Monitors are generally smaller with a higher dpi. They also have less input lag.

The main thing is they are just more comfortable to use if you are sitting close to the screen. Reading small text on a tv is a pain.

Have decided to head down to Ashbourne Argos to get that LG monitor tomorrow. It's a slight trek but it's not the worst. Have it reserved anyway so there'll be no surprises!

Cheers everyone for the recommendations and where to buy it etc!

How do you turn off the 3d on them?

According to reviews there's a button on the front of the monitor for doing that and there's also included software that can upscale 2D movies and games to 3D with a depth slider. Apparently works great for some, not so great for others and is kinda useless for movies that arnt natively 3D.

Oh and FWIW, I emailed Argos and they said they'd have stock back in the Dublin stores around 17th January, I'm just not arsed waiting :P

Did you get it? What do you think of it? Is their speakers on it?

I did yeah, not a whole lot of experience with it so far mind, but the screen itself is lovely. I'm still not sure how the 3D works. It seems that for natively 3D content, that all you need to do is put on the glasses and you don't actually have to turn on 3D mode from the monitor itself, that just seems to screw it up. I need to figure it all out though, the user manual wasn't much help.

There's no speaker on it but there's a headphone port that you can plug speakers into.

How is it for browsing and that?

Does the 3D interfere with that?

Does the 3D interfere with that?

It's great in 2D for browsing etc, havn't actually played any games or watched any proper videos on it yet but it's a really nice bright panel, light years ahead of what I had before.

The 3D works for browsing and stuff but there's very little point to it if you using it for that and it degrades the image quite a bit when you turn on 3D mode to the point where reading articles and stuff would be difficult so definitely not suitable for general tasks etc.

I just watched a couple of 3D youtube videos (which you don't need to turn on 3D mode for on the monitor as they are already made in 3D) and it's very cool, definitely a cool little novelty. I'll report back what its like for games (both 3D supported and "upscaled" games).
