Overeating

I am wondering if there are many people out there who experience overeating and compulsive eating. I am an overeater, but I have not been to any OA meetings. I went to psychotherapy sessions for 6 months and when I moved county, I fiinished my therapy sessions. I don't really want to get in to individual therapy sessions again as they are very expensive, so I was thinking of OA. Unfortunately, my problem of overeating is still as strong as it always has been, and the feelings of guilt and shame that accompany this disorder are starting to really build up again. I try writing in a diary, but I would like to meet other people who have overcome similar issues and have attended meetings. This isn't an issue which I can share with my family or friends, or even my GP. I am living in Co Meath now, and am not very familiar with Dublin, but would like to join a meeting in January. Any advice please?? Many thanks!

    I don't know about OA

But I do know about comfort eating.
And while I don't know if comfort drinking is even a term for sure drinking a 6 pack or a bottle or two of wine every evening is common.

You are not happy with yourself and I'm not sure if you live on your own or not.
But for sure coming home from work or college tired and pissed and lonely and upset will have you desperate to do anything to distract yourself

If you need a group setting OP weigh watchers can help. Not even that you need to shed a lot of weight but it's a positive atmosphere and can help you feel better about your relationship with food.

Equally so can a sports team, tennis club, night class, cycle home from work...anything at all to break the cycle.
I don't think you need expensive counselling

You say OA is expensive. They may provide excellent help but there is also help out there for free

    Good luck OP

    Hi OP

Unfortunately you might find iy difficult to find an OA meeting outside of the major cities.

My advice would be to reach out to bodywhys or even contact one of the Dublin meetings and they may be able to point you towards a meeting closer to you.

I wish you the best of luck. There can be great comfort & support to be found at these meetings.

I am in a similar situation to the OP. I would strongly advise AGAINST joining weight watchers.......any weight loss programme that focuses on tracking what you eat has potential to cause serious harm to people suffering from eating disorders. The focus for us sufferers needs to be on why we eat, not what we eat.

Counselling is expensive and can seem futile when no results are seen quickly.......but if at all possible stick with it. If you can't afford it and are considering coming to Dublin, the Marino clinic is very good and it is possible to get treatment subsidised by HSE.......think they paid half the cost when i went.

I would love to try overeaters anonymous but as someone has said there are very few meetings and i can't get to any due to my location and working hours. hopefully someone will give you more info.
