Upgrading a Pump, RPM a factor?

    Hi All,

I have a surepump 55/130 which is probably the best part of 20 years old. Its a long run for a system and with high ceilings, the second floor is higher than normal. Some rads are a bit clogged and with normal pressure they arent heating up properly, but with other rads switched off they heat up fine.

So I'm going for a new pump and want to upgrade the pressure from what i have.

Question is, the current pump runs at 2330rpm, whereas this Grundfos 15/60 which pumps to 6 metres and has great reviews, only has 1750 Rpm as a maximum.

    http://www.oilybits.com/grundfos-ups-15-60-super-selectric-central-heating-circulator-pump/prod_647.html

So has the RPM got much to do with it? Could the 1750 Grundfos pump more than the surepump with 2330 rpm? Am i looking at the wrong thing to judge a pump by?

    Thanks for all advise.

Could be a bigger impeller at lower revs

    Grundfos are very good pumps

Your standard D rated pump is being made obsolete come the new year and being replace with an A rated modulating pump

Modern pumps are much more efficient in every way possible but a simple phone call to Grundfos Technical in Ballymount dublin will answer any fears and questions you have.
I would also suggest a proper chemical power flush of your system before you spend money on a new pump.

Thanks, had a powerflush back in February, so it should be pretty good by now.

@CiKearney, thanks for the heads up, but i might stick with the older manual one. The new ones are 'Smart' and slow down and speed up (not sure how it works this out) and I know i have 4 underperforming radiators that need full blast.
