    Hey there,
I am hoping to buy a new piece of DJ equipment on ebay from the states.

Problem is not sure what will be the customs duty, the value of the product is around 200 dollars, shipping is 71 dollars. Is it based on the actual cost of the product or the value of the product in the eyes of customs?.
The product is worth than what I am paying for it.

Value of invoice(other other equally valid declaration of price). It will be liable for VAT at standard rate and duty at 2% as far as I am aware.

If thats what's wrote on the declaration by the person posting it then yes. Getting the sender to put proof of the transaction value (screenshot only with relavent info from paypal etc.) in/on the package might help too. If you pay 200, i imagine you'll pay approx. 50 euro altogether like.

The duty is calculated over the cost of the product, as in what the importer has paid for the goods, plus transportation cost. Customs may require evidence of the payment in the form of credit card statement or PayPal receipt and the like.

VAT is calculated @ 23% over the above value plus the duty.

The US dollar value is converted at the customs rate of exchange which is published on revenue.ie (sorry don't have the link immediately to hand).

Bearing mind that the courier company or an post may charge an administration fee to cover their cost for the entry and collecting the customs charges from you. That could be between € 5 to
    € 15 per shipment.

    Cheers,
    Rudol289
