slow down but if theres no garda there signalling you to stop then continue.

if they are 20 feet away then the checkpoint is either over or they havent started it yet.

Drive slowly as far as the garda and prepare to stop. He can't see you or anything on the window from more than 10 feet. He'll indicate for you to stop.

If they're dealing with something at the road side, drive slowly past while preparing to stop if required. The guard will specifically indicate for you to stop if needed

    c) Rev the engine, beep the horn and insist on conducting any further exchange in Irish.

And when he comes over to talk to you, wave the mobile at him, tell him you're busy talking to the missus and could he deal with the guy behind you first.

Check that the cap the Garda is wearing is actually his/hers- Ask to see t he name or number written inside.

Checkpoint duty is boring and Gardai do appreciate such interest in their work as it helps to pass the time.

In fact they may invite you back to the station to likewise amuse the other Gardaí.

If you have a relative a county councillor, or a first year law student, be sure to stress that
