Seems cheap for a 2006. Lots of 2004 on Donedeal for that price so I'd be slightly cautious. Are you looking for private for commercial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭BrendanD

Just looking for a private car for the wife , yes seen quite a few on done deal thought that one looked the best

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 494 ✭✭Barry Barry

Yeah, that 2006 one could be good value if it checks out okay. Its the basic spec model though. Heres a nicely spec'ed 2005 3.0 TDI for a little more, http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3925381

Personally, I'd choose spec over age but thats just me :)

Good luck with your search though

Yes, it would use more fuel but not much more. The 3.0 TDI is much stronger than the 2.5 TDI as the Touareg is a big vehicle so personally I'd for for the 3.0 TDI.

Out of interest, what mileage does your wife do per year?

The 3.0TDI Touareg is a way nicer machine than the 2.5TDI. You should at least test drive an example of each before making a decision.

    Thanks Barry and George

We were trying to work out the mileage here we think it would not be over 10000 in the year .

Is this mostly city driving or motorway?

10,000 miles per year doesn't justify owning a diesel car. You should be doing about 20,000 miles per year to justify owing a diesel.

Most diesel cars today have DMF failure etc as a result of this but I'm not sure if its the same with a car of this age.

Either way the tax is savage on them and they are reasonably hard on tyres (Permanent 4x4). I couldn't recommend one for that type of mileage although I'd recommend it before any other in the same category. Not being sexiest, honestly, but they are a fairly 'big' car to drive. Not exactly a cruiser.

Why do you need a Touareg for such low mileage?

Sorry had to Google DMF failure.
mostly town driving with about 80 miles once a week on a motorway.

With that type of driving you need to look at petrols. Buying a diesel will only lead to trouble down the line, with expensive bills.

Petrol 4x4/SUVs can be picked up very cheap these days.

That's mad idea for a car IMO.

A car like this one would do the job you need it to do, would be cheaper to buy and run, more comfortable on the road and safer due to better handling and better brakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

A Santa Fe would be a lot cheaper to run than a Touareg, generally speaking so might be a better bet. What car is it replacing? What sort of base are you coming from regarding running costs?

Coming from a 2002 rav 4 petrol 4 wheel drive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

A Touareg (or any similar full size premium SUV) will be a fair old shock to the system coming from a RAV4. They are horrific on diesel, the tax you probably already know about plus if something goes wrong you are looking at a big bill. The Santa Fe while expensive to run compared to a car would not be in the same league as a Touareg. Of course the trade-off is that they aren't in the same league in terms of image, fit and finish or driving experience either.

Tbh an SMax or Galaxy would be much better imho. Big SUV does not necessarily mean "safer"....whatever that is....

Really good bargains to be had with petrol 4x4/SUVs now. How about something like this? http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4184364
Great spec, low mileage, one owner and its newer than the Touareg.

    Its got the badge factor
    good condition
95,000 miles on it which is nothing for that engine
3 litre petrol auto so no DMF / DPF worries
    nice to drive
    4wd

10,000 miles per year with 4000 miles on the motorway in a yoke like a Touareg and I wouldn't be overly quick to discount the diesel option :)
And I am by no means a diesel fanboy.

Oh, autos don't have a DMF? You learn something new everyday! :) Sorry about that OP.

Also, if the Subaru is local to you there'd be no harm in bringing the missus for a look.

Some do but they don't fail as commonly as on a manual.

I would recommend highly Subaru, that forester looks very nice, had a legacy and found it to be one of the best cars I have ever owned. As for the Toureag they appear to be quite reliable, 2.5 in reality will do about 33MPG where the 3.0 will do approx 26MPg.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 494 ✭✭Barry Barry

3.0 TDI would still be the one to go for in my opinion.

10,000 miles may be on the borderline for a car though personally I think even at 10,000 miles a diesel is justifiable but for any 4x4 it has to be diesel even at half that mileage. They are very heavy on diesel never mind petrol, diesel is the only way to go imo, it would break your heart trying to keep petrol in one.

That particular one is manual so its at a higher risk of DMF failure.

The DMFs in the disco are kolsterised and bonded using ultra high tensile titanium stretched bolts so are really sturdy.

I dont know what toureag's youve been driving but neither of them will do over 30 in the the real world, and it would be more like 30 for the 2.5 and 29 for the 3.0 , until you put a heavy load in them and 4 people , then the 3.0 will be better on fuel.

road tax is 414 euro more a year on 3.0 than a 2.5

You could pick up a 07/08 KIA Sorrento for €10k too. Not really the same a Touareg though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭stimpson

A mate bought a 2.5 diesel last year and it was a nightmare for him. It raped his wallet on a regular basis. Then it left him stranded on multiple occasions and when he tried to trade it in this year he was offered half what he paid for it.

He eventually got shut of it for close to what he paid for it and is now driving a Nissan Cashcow. A big comedown, but at least it starts every time.

fairly comfy all the same when loaded up with leather, climate, cruise control and the 5 speed auto box. I think considering he asked about a touraeg that the badge is an issue, if he just wanted a 4x4 coming from a rav4 landcruiser would have been the logical next step.

I think 90% of people would rather empty their wallets on a touraeg rather than cry every time they turned the key of a 'faux by four' like that.

Is the SUV safety thing not a myth ? Sure, they look safe but are easier to roll and don't necessarily perform particularly well in crash tests.

I would second that they are a nice machine. I test drove one a while back on this posters recommendation and I was impressed.

I didnt get it in the end as my wife got preggo and we had to replace her car first but I may still get one next year. Badge wouldnt bother me personally though.

Freelander 2 might be an option if you want to go smaller engined.

I'm sure you're right. It's a lovely place to wait for the AA to tow you and your screaming children home. The only reason he took the Nissan was that it was the only place that would give him a reasonable trade in.

I dont know what it is but a good Forester is hard to come by at this time of year

If you like the look of them and I would recommend one, wait until maybe Feb and you'll bound to come across a few nice ones advertised

Doesn't break your heart, quite the opposite. Just puts a big hole in your wallet. (Mine would be lucky to average 15mpg.)
