Commericals in private use?

Ive just started getting some driving lessons this week and hoping to buy my first car in the middle/end of next year all going well.

Id like a small cheap van or maybe a jeep as would be handy for towing the boat and for carting tools and going around the mountains etc

But I don't understand this commercial thing? Can I buy a van, maybe like a kangoo or something just for myself to drive around in. Or are these things only allowed for people who need them for work?

If I am allowed will I be charged extra for using a commercial vehicle for personal use? If so how is the extra charge worked out.

Sorry for all the newb questions. But I dont really have anyone else to ask :(

Commercial tax warrants commercial purposes only.

    Everything else private tax

By law you should pay private tax so whatever it is for 1.9 you will pay if you can get a letter from your employer to say you need it for work or get a form stamped by the guards to declare you will only use it for work you can get the commercial tax rate

Has anybody here been asked for that when taxing commercial out of interest?

    Yes, many, many, many times.

All first taxing of new vehicles, and we had to do it for all commercials when taxing them after they clamped down on it.

WILS: Im unemployed. So I want it for private use. I dont even know anybody that would stamp it for me under the counter to say I work for them. Does this mean I will be forced into buying a car instead of a van.

I had to get that form stamped last year by the cops.Do you need to do it again if you are renewing the tax and the details are all the same?

You can still buy a van, but it would need to be taxed privately, so that's on engine size rather than a flat fee of €333 per year.

Not 100% sure about the insurance, but www.insuremyvan.ie will probably quote you.

No. It just means you will have to pay tax at the private (engine size based) rate rather than at the commercial rate. So you would be better off trying to buy something like a 1.3 Opel Combo or even a 1.5 Kangoo where your tax costs will be roughly the same whether you pay cc or commercial rate rather than something like a 1.8 Transit Connect or a 1.9 Caddy where the cc based tax will be pretty high compared to commercial tax.

It should only have to be done once for each van. If you are renewing tax on the same van as the previous year then you shouldn't have to make the declaration a second time. But if you change van then you have to go through the process again.

So somebody in before they started enforcing this can just keep renewing it until they sell up despite it being used for personal use?

No, even though we'd had vans on commercial tax for a couple of years, after they'd clamped down on commercial tax a couple of years ago, we had to get the goods dec stamped for those vans when we went to re-tax them.

Is that the 1.3 CDTI engine??

Is that a chain driven engine and is it reliable too??

Mate of mine is looking at a 2005 1.3 engines Vauxhall van at the moment.

Be aware also that if you're towing a trailer that is over 750kg you need a separate licence (EB for a car with a trailer). This also entails a separate test and you need to have a full licence first before you apply for a learner permit for towing. Obviously this will only matter depending on the size of boat/trailer that you want to tow.

I like mine all though it is the 90bhp version so a bit quicker but I know people who have driven the combo 1.3 and they said it is reasonably powerful. As for oil the1.3 engine is particularly fussy I only put Castrol 5w30 synthetic oil for opel engines in mine use anything else and they cause serious trouble. Not sure if the combo uses 5w30 you have to check. My van burns no oil what so ever I actually find it weird how little it uses. I don't have to top it up once I service it ever 15k km. Reliability I have mine 4 months it has never stopped failed to start or it has never shown a warning light on the dash and I often do journeys over 200km without stopping so I consider it reliable.
