about five times as many men than women kill themselves here. i guarantee you a good half of them are gay. its a quiet genocide thats been happening for centuries, all over the world. the other half likely long-term unemployed.

just copied and pasted this from the Irish Times, what a glib, superficial and idiotic comment on suicide, how many people are gay and don't kill themselves ? Just because somebody gets depressed, despondent or feel they don't fit into society do they have to be gay?

Why would you read a comments section? They're the dark unwashed armpit of the internet, full of filth and evil.

    Stupid comment.
Half of them are gay. - Something must be done about the gays.

Therefore the other half are straight. - Something must be done about the straights.

I knew the word "gay" didn't mean happy!

What type of idiot comes to that conclusion? Mostly gay or long term unemployed men commit suicide.

I know plenty of guys that blew their face off or hung themselves in work, who also happened to be married to women.

For what it's worth, I was at a talk given by the Regional (Irish) director of the Samaritans and he said the biggest proportion of calls they received were over intolerance. He said most of them were about sexuality, and the lesser but still big proportion of those calls were about people being intolerant of depression ("ah sure, just cheer up," "smile for me!" etc.)

I suppose it is possible once ya start lashing statistics around. But I doubt that it is a high cause of suicide.

When someone says "I guarantee you" it normally translates as "I'm just making this sh*t up as I go along to reinforce my own odd beliefs"

The random casual flinging around of terms such as genocide is an insult to the memories of the hundreds of millions of innocent people who have throughout history been slaughtred and murdered in the most horrific fashion. Yes, there was a genocide carried out against gay people in Nazi Germany, this is not happening in 21st century Ireland. That a large proportion of young gay men (albiet sadly) choose to end their lives this way is a collection of individuals suffering under their own personal circumstances, and that certainly doesn't equate to a genocide.

Most of the men I know committed suicide were not gay, some were in fact very popular with women, had lots of friends but they were good at masking some deeper issues troubling them.

Those issues could be the result of psychological, physical or sexual abuse they endured growing up, neglect by their family/parents, or simply the inability to live up to what ignorant people in society expects of them.

I think the issues affect both men and women but it's much easier for women to find support through family and friends or groups...men are told to "toughen up" "stop being a wuss" which only compounds how the man feels, in the end he sees no way out and just kills himself.

Society treats men who suffer from depression very badly in my opinion.
It's almost a crime for men to suffer from depression.

Alcohol and drugs certainly don't mix well with depression and that's a factor too but It's mainly attitudes towards depression in Ireland that needs to change.

Don't just ostracize a man because he's depressed, offer possible solutions/advice.

People who feel suppressed (or bullied) whether from different sexual tendencies, big or small, ugly, good looking, stupid, intelligent, over happy, sad, employed, unemployed, dying or feel like they are dying, could go down this road,

it is possible for anybody from any walk of life to find themselves at a place of no return, it seems to be a human trait, I am not aware of any other species that will go to these extremes to get away from whatever is that took them there.

    how many is plenty?

Well for a start 1 is too many. Off the top of my head I can confirm 6 guys I actually knew committed suicide in the last 4 years, some hung, some drowned, some shot themselves. There are another 10 or so that I am aware of but did not actually know.

"Plenty" was a bad choice of words. I wish it were less than the above numbers.

of course 1 is too much.

I'm sorry that has happened to you. 6 is a huge number.

How is it homophobic? By my reading the comment was drawing attention to the percentage of gay people who were taking their lives.

Disregarding the sexual orientation issue, the figures for suicide in Ireland are horrendous.

Yes, he's a bit of a bastard alright.

Genocide??? He only cares about Gay men who kill themselves?

Reminds me of Perez Hilton making a big announcement that he was not going to bully kids on his website after he read a GAY teen was bullied and later killed himself. Mind you, this filthy talentless sociopath was fine when straight teens were killing themselves.

    Meh

People make idiotic comments on the internet all the time.

There are some idiotic posts in this thread as well.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I'll choose D as it covers whichever of the above three is correct.
    What do I win?

Its just an idiotic comment by an Irish Times reader in the comments section. It's not worth a thread. Its like creating a thread about this post ffs.

It's not particularly any of those, but it does at least have a team of moderators to weed out the worst of the crap. Go on, pick any YouTube video at random, and see how much of the comments section you can handle before grabbing a rifle and climbing a bell tower.

Ironic that this thread comes up today as tomorrow marks the 10 year anniversary of my friend who chose to die by suicide.

However, in the past 10 years due to my friend's death I have taken a keen interest in suicide and statistics etc, to the point where I have worked closely with Teenline Ireland and Console.

The following was true at the time maybe 8 or 9 years ago but the comment made in the original post isn't a million miles off, of the 16-25 age group the majority of suicides do come from young men, the majority there are gay, I can't remember the actual figures, after young gay men came young male travellers! Make of this what you will but like I said the statement in the OP isn't totally inaccurate and to be fair that could be due to lack of information provided.
