    Hi,

Does anyone know what the procedure for reporting a crime is? Do you just drop into a Garda station or in this digital age is there some nice on-line form one could fill out to report criminal behaviour ? Also, if one does report a crime is there any form of follow up in terms of them letting you kown if an investigation is being undertaken or what the progress/outcome is ?

    Thanks,

    Usjes.

You have to call in to a Garda station. There should be a station near you that is open 24hrs a day.

If you are the victim of a crime you must make a report in person. If you simply want to report suspicious activity you can phone the station or the confidential line. There is a scheme piloted on the Garda website for reporting thefts online but it's basically just a round about way to do it in person because the Garda will likely have to call to you anyway.

I have reported many crimes using the phone. Never an issue with it.

In the past I wrote by letter however this became a long, tedious and largely ineffective method. In the interim an acquaintance of mine suggested the original 999 call, however, I was later to find out the the Emergency services number has since been changed to 112. Now when I report crimes I simply take the bus to the nearest garda station as I find this is the most effective and trusted way. hope this aids you in you're crime reporting

999 wasn't changed to 112, both of these numbers will contact emergency services. 112 was introduced in 90's as a common number across the EU as well as some other countries. It also allowed emergency calls to be made from mobile phones that were keypad locked etc. I was talking to a Paramedic who was involved in a school survey where, due to the influence of American TV, most children stated the emergency number to be 911 (i.e. the American number). I believe 911 will also work over here now (on mobile phones anyway, not sure about landlines).
