buying an older style body?

    I'm looking for some advice/opinions, please, about buying a Kia C'eed. A new version of this car came out this year, which I like very much but a used 12 reg in the new style will cost me about 6k more than an 11 reg in the old body.

    Should I consider the 11 reg? Is this an opportunity to pick up what is still a nice car at a good price or the kiss of death to any residual value in the car when I look to trade again in about 3 years?? Any opinions would be great, thanks!

    The new Ceed is a good car, but the old one was a fine car too. If you are not fixated on year then €6K is a lot of money in your pocket.

    Depreciation will always be more on the old shape model but you also have to factor in that it is a year older than the new shape so not really a fair comparison.

    I'd be looking at the Hyundai i30 also as it is the sister car of the Ceed.

    More than the shape of a car changes between generations, it's typically a safer car as NCAP testing becomes more rigorous. The new cee'd isn't just a facelift as far as I know.

    Have a look at the safety equipment in each and consider that you're probably getting a more modern system, as well as the fresher design. This may or may not be important to you, but ask yourself if it is before you make up your mind.

    Thanks for the replies, folks. Bazz26, I have looked at the i30 too, which is also very nice. There's not much to choose between them, although I thought the C'eed felt a little more solid on the road.. A used 12 in those would set me back about 4k more than the 11 C'eed. MrDerp is right that the changes are more than cosmetic, but so is Stallingrad in pointing out that the old C'eed is still a good car..... I guess what I'm trying to figure out is whether the cut in the price of the 11 reg is worth the extra depreciation at the back end when I try to trade next

    Its worth it if the gap in prices is big enough, no point in buying the old one and saving pocket change. 6k seems reasonable...

    Completely untrue, the tests are exactly the same, a 5 star car does not become a 4 star all of a sudden, thats just marketing...

    It all depends on your agenda too! If you're holding onto the thing for longer, say 5 years + it'll matter less. But if you're reading for new in 3 years it definitely would. Still a 6k difference is very substantial :p

    .. imho I would buy the 11 reg. €6k.....I could think of much better uses for it tbh. An 11 reg car is still very new and the 12 won't be longing catching up with it, depreciation wise. ...

    but you will only have 5 years warranty remaining on the 11 reg in a few weeks..... ;-) being serious if you can afford it go for the newer model.     Old 5 star and new 5 star are completely different,
    Example. Toyota urban cruiser would have walked the old 5 star test but only gets 3 on the new test

    Thanks for all the input, very much appreciated! To muddy the waters, Hyundai have offered me a much better deal than Kia against a 12 reg i30 (used but new style) that lowers the cost difference to about 3.5K. It's the 1.6l diesel deluxe, very nice, very tempted! :D

    ...mmm.....you'd only need to keep it one more year than 'normal' and you'd have recouped that. Sounds good to me, tbh.

    Fair enough have read up on ncap but they have added stuff like lane assist etc to the mix, where before it was based on the stuctural crash tests, to me it sounds like marketing has taken over, but of course the lane assit is a good addition to the test I just think they are devices to take away the responsiblity from the driver, eventually these electonic "safety devices" will drive your car for you.. Downgrading a car becuse it dosen't have these new gadgets is a bit sly by NCAP the structual integrity of a car does not change over the years e.g. the vw golf Mk6 has been using fairly much the same chassis as the mk5 again this car still has a 5 star rating but has no "gadgets" but cars from Hyundai etc with these also have a 5 star rating.. I bet once VW bring out the mk7 it will have some sort of extra features and the new one will be rated at 5 stars but the old one will be downgraded.

    If you look at the side impact test now, it is much more severe than before.

    The side impact has not changed at all its been 18mph since it was introduced.

    The speed of the pole test has not changed, but instead of just checking head injuries, it now checks a lot more.
    The pole test was optional previously as far as i remember, it was a way of scoring extra points in the side impact test with an MDB (movable deformable barrier) it is now mandatory and is catching a lot of cars out.

    That was introduced three years ago? the checks from 09 check chest and abdomen, but I still don't get how NCAP can downgrade a car which in 09 had 5 stars.

    You're right about the marketing bit. I suppose its only fair to downgrade if the criteria has changed. People only see the 5 stars and assume they're the same.

    Far as I remember its the pole test that's different. Is a long time since I had a reason to be up on such things, but I'm sure there's something available online that explains better than I can

    Fair enough I have an interest as I may be buying a new car soon (same as current) and as I carry little passangers these things effect my decisions so just trying to get my head around the grading.

    I wouldn't feel unsafe in a 5 star on the old type test
    Idea of these ratings is to push the boundries. Not driving like a tool and good observation is the key IMO

    The old model seems like a reasonably priced car, ;)
    I'd say go for the older model, just because a newer model is out doesn't mean the old model is now a death trap.
    And although accidents can happen it's not like the OP is buying the car to crash it. If you like the car, buy the car then visit us in bangernomics to have some fun with the money you saved :D

    This too shall pass.
