Angus cross for me(the grey colour). They are pretty easy to finish under age and they are not that hard bought. Its next to impossible to finish those good continental stores under 30 months

we buy weanlings approx 380 kilos and castrte them. we keep them for 2 winters and fatten them all under 30 months. i always find charolais crosse the best for weight gain and reasonably easy to finish. tried limos and some can be good but the mad ones counteract any benefit, also a bit harder to finish. blues dont grow enough for my system, always kill well for their size ok but impossible to get a good finish. favourite cattle of all are blonde d`aquaitaine, but they are bloody hard finished ,but by god they put on some amount of weight for age.not as nice to look at as charolais`s though. used to buy them cheap as lads did not like the look of them but not any more. also have got on very well with romagnolas down through the years but they are few and far between. sorry about the long reply.

Do you buy in weanling or store sales? Do you find it a better job buying them that bit stronger? Would you find less problems with pneumonia etc?

Strong weanlings stand up to more abuse, and i find always more after the smaller ones, bull beef lads i think do like them heavier so thats them out ot the bids;)

hi muckit. yes definitely find the stronger weanling stronger for pneumonia. firstly are inclined to be well weaned as born nov to jan. secondly if they do get a touch they will recover that bit quicker but you need to get any of them early to be successful. would buy them even heavier and have done only castration of heavy bulls cuts the good out of them for a lot longer. have castrated lads up to 550kilos if they came at the right price:D:D buy them at weanling sales

"blues dont grow enough for my system"

    DMAXMAN,

How did you find dealing with blues? Did they kill out under 30 months? What type of carcus weight did they finish out at?

    Thanks

we had no problems finishing blues from the dairy herd. over the years off grass and under 30 months. two best bullocks we ever finished were blues. one from a montbelliard cross cow and one from a hereford cross. If you couls pick up a blue form a traditional breed of cow you would get that bit of fat that would make finishing easier

always managed to get them away by 30 months ok and they always killout well for their size. only blues that i had to kill out ove r400 kgs carcase were out uf sim cows. made them into great cattle, growth of the sim and power of the blues.
