Freelander Head Gasket

    Hi there,

we have a 02 Freelander with 75,000 miles on it, I am aware of the head gasket problem these cars develop and have been watching it like a hawk.

    However,

Now I have noticed the coolant has a bit of oil in it, and the main dealer gave it the 'sniff test' to check oil for contaminants and sure enough, diagnosed HG failure, they only recommend a whole new engine of course.

Remarkably, the car is driving brilliantly, with no perceived loss of power etc, but would like to address the problem before it breaks down, does anyone know if replacing the HG with a new multi layer one would do the trick? Does anyone know of any good independents beside on and off road (bad experience)?????

Any help offered or advice given much appreciated.

if that 1.8 petrol, then most famous k series engine. usually slight overheat damages headgasket or even crack the head. to skim and test engine head would cost 100 ish euro . it is unusual though, that on so low mileage engine headgasket gone, but if that car mainly been used in city, often start and stop engine, may cause such problem, one of reasons also is long head bolts (bad engine design ) , which expand on hot engine, and shrinks when cools down , that way damaging headgasket. usually multi layer steel headgasket would solve problem for a while. I think engine head bolts has to be replaced also. i would not advice use unknown make parts. rimmerbros.co.uk usually sells original stuff. i've done few of them.

The multilayer head gasket should fix it and any independent can do the job. Whereabouts are you?

I'd love to hear LR's reasoning for you needing a new engine.

A proper repair with uprated parts should be permanent and as your engine hasn't overheated or suffered any temperature issues then parts like the ladder rail etc should be ok although you could consider replacing that anyway is you plan on keeping the car long term.

Again, like I said in irl3543's other thread, I am curious to know how boards.ie could let someone like this user onto this forum.

    Huh? What you on about?
