Goodwill Warranty

    Hello,

I have a FSH with Lexus, recently the EGR valve went on it and because it was out of warranty by 6 months I had a big fight with Lexus to get them to fix it as a matter of goodwill.

I recently took the car for a service and was informed that the water pump is leaking and needs to be changed (400 euro) and the right caliper is seized and needs to be fixed (300 euro), the majority of these costs are labour as the water pump e.g. is only 80 euro new.

My question is, if i get an independent mechanic to fix both issues does it affect any goodwill option I may need down the line or as long as I continue to get it serviced by Lexus would this suffice?

    Many thanks in advance

TBH, Your warranty is your warranty. You are not entitled to any "Goodwill Warranty", so anything fixed outside of your warranty is a gesture of goodwill.

In my opinion getting a different mechanic to fix the issues won't make a difference, as the goodwill thing is subjective and chances are being over 6 months out of warranty I couldn't see the original dealer or Lexus going out of their way to cover something.

€400 for a water pump and €300 for a caliper, not much sign of 'goodwill' there.

I think I may not have explained the situation correctly.

When the EGR valve went, Lexus would only stand over it as 'Goodwill' if the car had a FSH from Lexus, which it did - thankfully, otherwise the fix would have cost 7K!

My question is does me getting an independent mechanic to fix the water pump and caliper void my 'goodwill warranty' from them if a big issue like the EGR valve ever came up again?

€7k for an EGR valve replacement?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    I'm in the wrong business!

Keep the car serviced with a main dealer if you wish if you want to be in the best possible position for goodwill if required, but I would get the other items replaced by an independent garage personally.

Apparently the entire engine had to be stripped down and steam cleaned and pistons etc replaced...

Wooaaah! €7K for an EGR, something very wrong with that story!

Some lies were told by a certain dealer me thinks, EGR for 7k? Right.

How long would you expect these suggested goodwill fixes last OP? As long as you get the car main dealer serviced?

There's a reason for a time limit on a warranty - as cars age parts wear and sometimes fail.

    Was it a headgasket by any chance? I'm guessing it's a 220d?

I guess i'd expect it to last up to 100K miles.

I was told EGR valve but am guessing there was more to it, if the entire engine had to be stripped down and steam cleaned...

    Yes, IS 220 D.

Why as a matter of interest?

Id say you have had all the goodwill you are going to get out of them at this point tbh. 100k miles of goodwill warranty is not exactly realistic.

Would a water pump and brake caliper not be seen as wear and tear or consumable items similar to a battery or tyre?

    Normally would be.
