Sony Xperia P

I am considering buying an Xperia P for myself
I don't usually spend that sort of money on a phone. In fact I haven't bought a new phone in 4 years.

Anyway, I've been reading reviews and user reviews and it seems like a good phone.

What I'd like to do it get the phone unlocked as I'm considering switching to 48 Months network. If only for the data allowance
How hard is it to get it unlocked?
would I be as well to buy the phone off the likes of chitter chatter or ebay?

Is this like the Sony Ray? Sony Ray won't work with any other headphones but the ones provided with phone? :(

Actually no, I don't have any regrets with buying the phone. I had a HTC desire before this and just wanted a change. The skin that sony has used is not very intrusive and gives a unique imo apperance to the phone.

The screen is really good and I generally only need the brightness at the lowest settings as it uses a 4th white pixel or something. In direct sunlight you need to change the brightness it but its not really a problem as far as I can see.

Also with the latest update in software to ICS its very easy on battery consumption.

If you store alot of media on the phone the 16gb storage may be an issue as it cant be upgraded with an sdcard.

for that money I don't think you will find something that is as well built.

Most of the folks that I have the pleasure of dealing with in Vodafone knew nothing about the phones they were trying to flog. So you can only be confident in your own bit of research If your after something.

Good stuff OP, I'm XS user myself.

Dont use 48 though, they're terrible data piggybacked off of o2 and throttled heavily.

If you have good coverage in your locality from three, go for them. Much better data/text plan(€20 top up = free texts and all you can eat data), you'll get up to 6Mb down rather than about 0.5 from 48.

Agreed about the Three network, I switched from 48 three weeks ago due to network dropping and bad internet speed, allowance is 3GB for the month on 48 but its 15GB on Three.

i'll see how I get on with 48

its my first smartphone so it'll be a steep learning curve

Don't know but you can take a scissors to the old one, no difference as long as you don't cut too deep.

If it doesn't work, get the mini-one.

I've a chopped up one for my work phone as they didn't give out micro-sims and seemed a bit clueless about the whole thing so just cut up the one I had.

    Nice input ^^

The Xperia lines are selling very well right now, and with good reason, they're quality alternatives to HTC and Samsung with much nicer aesthetics.

I've spotted one available in the UK for £150 (about €185 at the moment) and I'm thinking of taking the plunge. It is €350 in Meteor shops, fwiw, so it can't be that bad.

It is indeed, so that saves €10 - 20 on getting it done here. The only downside is that they don't deliver to Ireland but that's what parcelmotel is for, sure.

I am having serious Wi-Fi problems with this phone.

The wi-fi just will not switch on. Not for my home network nor those in public places.

    I've updated the phone.

    Can anyone recommend a solution??

Turn on your mobile data and check for another software update. If that's available it will solve all issues you are having.

Last few pages in that thread ^ people reported having problems after updating their phones to ICS .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭nice_guy80

ICS was on the phone when I got it

have tried the suggestions there, no difference.
if I didn't have a 3GB data allowance, the lack of wi-fi would be very, very annoying.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,692 ✭✭✭Jarren

Contact Amazon.de and return the phone.
This would be the simplest solution to your wifi problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭nice_guy80

It might well be the best route to take

As I said in an earlier post if you search for an update using your mobile data it will solve the issue. Sony realeased a follow up because of the issues your having were reported before the new firmware you require is called 6.1.1.B.1.54

Try that and see if it helps

Setting -> Wifi - toggle Wifi ON - what happens?

Is your laptop PC connected wirelessly to UPC?

Therre is also a router setting to allow more than one device to connect - Windows -> Control Panel -> Network & Internet - after that it depends on what Windows you're running.

Before you ship the phone back to Amazon, I'd definitely make sure it's the phone that's at fault - can the phone connect to another wi-fi network e.g. a coffee-shop - would be worth trying before sending it back.

tried that in a cafe last week - wi fi wouldn't turn on

the wi fi won't turn on to even attempt to connect to a network
it just says - turning wi-fi on, but it never happens. when I attempt to turn wi fi on with the battery saver app I have installed then it won't stay on (yes I tried uninstalling that and running the wi-fi)
my laptop is connected to the wireless network right now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,037 ✭✭✭blindsider

Hmmm. You've narrowed it down a bit which is good.

I'd contact Amazon and ask what they advise, and I'd try to find someone local who would have a quick look at it for you. I'd try one of the repair shops, just to see what they say - I wouldn't hand any money over locally - just ask their opinion.....looking more like a return to Amazon tho

On a separate note, my Xperia P is absolutely horrendous for battery life. I'm on the latest s/w version 6.1.1B.154 or whatever it's called.

I'm not a heavy phone user and I'm barely getting 10 hrs from full charge:

    Wi-fi - Off

BT - on but only connected to hands-free for 30 mins per day, only the odd short call.

    Voice-calls - 15 mins per day max

    Text - 2-3 per day

    Browsing - rarely - Lap-top beside me.

I'm using Sony's own battery extender in ICS.

Android OS seems to be the culprit acc to 'Power management' - 76% of battery usage.

    Any ideas?

I don't know if Juice Defender would work with the Sony battery tool.

I see that Google Maps etc are running - is there a way of killing them and leaving them off until I actually want to use them?

Advanced Task Killer seems to only kill apps temporarily.

    Thanks!

I did a few things to help the battery on mine.

    1. Kill the weather app. It might have been hinted at here but a guy on xda saw it draining a ridiculous amount overnight. Go into Settings -> Apps -> Weather Widgets and disable the sh1te out of it.
    2. Use the extended standby feature under Power Management.
    3. I also went into Settings -> System -> Developer options and changed the Background Process Limit to 0.

I have noticed the battery life improving (especially after the weather app was disabled) but I still need to charge it every day. That's probably the downside of a 1300 mAh battery though. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Jelly Bean is released at the end of the month.

I have the same phone, set in the same way. It seems I'm the luckiest guy around. I keep reading of short life batteries, but I have charged my phone last on Sunday at 1 am and today, Thursday at almost 1 pm (108 hours later), after some phone calls, some texts and some short web browsing, the battery is at 52%. Usually I charge it once a week.

I never turn it off unless necessary.
I unplugged the charger at 1:00 am between Sat and Sun and it's still half charged. Probably I will charge it again on Saturday.
Actually I am amazed of this performance because before I bought it everybody kept telling me about this issue.
