Horse earnings vs winnings

I'm was looking up horses on the Racing Post the other day and it dawned on me that I don't know the difference between earnings and winnings, as the example of below they can be quite different. Can someone explain what the difference between earnings and winnings is?…

Winnings is money earned in winning a race, earnings is money earned by placing and winning combined

Cheers for that Nulty. Do you know if there is place money paid for point to point races? I heard point to point races pay about 800 to winners, but how about 2nd 3rd 4th?

Normally, the €800 would be divided between the first 3 horses. 1st- €560, 2nd- €160 and 3rd- €80.
