Can anyone tell me if a short block from an early mk5 Golf 04, code BCA is compatible, interchangeable, with an earlier mk4 98 AHW.
    Tia Jim.

I don't think it is . I'm open to correction but I think there are very slight differences between them

    Hi burke027

    Thanks for the fast reply.
Id hate to find it was"nt compatible, the hard way. It"s just that I have an excellent BCA spare that suffered cambelt failure and wrecked the head. They have the same crank sensor, clutch and pistons listed, so thought, maybe.

I remember doing something quite similar a while back and when I got the engine built up there where very slight differences like the egr and that. So had to go source another engine. Hope that helps you out. I built the engine up on the bench in full and only then did I see the difference

I had problems when replacing the engine in the 04 Golf as the donor engine came from a 06, same BCA code but no egr on the 06 engine. Had to carefully drill through the rear of the head to no 4 exhaust port on the donor engine for the egr source, and fit the original intake manifold.

    Back to the drawing board.

I am pretty sure the bottom ends would be interchangeable. Have never tried to do what you are doing though so can't be 100% sure.

Thanks George, not too sure my self.

98 car, belongs to a chap who works in the local factors. 100% sound fella, so keen to help him out if at all possible. Very fresh car apart from the engine and only does about 5k per year.

It failed the nct on high emissions, hc,s high. Compression test and leak test shows cylinder 2&3 leaking badly into crankcase and no 4 on ex valve. He"s willing to spend money on it, but as I have this BCA short block, that I know is very good,. Id like to use it if possible.

PS, story is, it"s had rings and head overhauled previously, before he got it.

    Regards Jim.

I reckon it will fit Jim, but I'm not taking the blame if it doesn't :pac:

'98 golf has exact same part number as early '04 mk5. Letters at the end of part number is slightly out on late '04 mk5, probably not a major difference. Chassis number will tell you for definite if it's late or early '04. Hope that helps...

we have fitted 03 golf bca engines to 98 ahw engined cars without any issue. These have both been mk4 based cars tho. The injection system, coils, manifolds etc just have to be transferred from the original engine to the newer bca engine. The bca engine has the egr valve on the side of the head and the ahw has it on the manilfold, so you will have to make a small plate to blank off the hole in the head and bolt it on, very easy to do this. It is not as easy to do the swap the other way around i.e fitting a ahw engine to a bca car. Hope this helps

The plan is to use the head from the AHW on the BCA block. Head will need some repairs though it seems to be pretty good.

Beginning to look like its straight forward enough.

This passed the emissions retest today after some magic potion additive treatment.
