Virus harm hard drive?

    Will a virus harm the hard drive of a laptop. Would it not be OK to wipe everything off it

    They can corrupt the Hard Drive and ruin windows but wiping the HD and reinstall windows will leave it like brand new.

    There's plenty of people out there that will tell you that they can use various scanners, removal tools etc to clean viruses. At the end of the day the only sure way of getting rid of a virus and more importantly undo the damage that it has done, is to wipe the drive and re install windows.

    Be careful of who you get to do this for you. I just got a call from someone in Galway who left his laptop to a shop to be repaired. They wiped it and installed a cracked version of windows XP with service pack 2 and now he can't install his programs or do any updates.

    A reputable repair shop should be able to back up your files (even if your computer won't start)
    Do ALL the updates for you
    Re install your applications (if they have the software)
