golf - coil - handheld warning?

Problem with my golf (03 1.6) recently. Sometimes the engine light comes on and the car loses some power and jerks a bit on acceleration and also when stopped and idling. Fairly sure its just one of the coils failing as its happened before on golfs I've driven.

Problem is its an intermittent problem. At the moment the engine light isn't on and its fine. Tomorrow it could happen again.

My question is if I bring it to someone now and they plug in the handheld, will they be able to tell me which coil is the problem or does the engine light have to be on for the fault to show up?
