Become self-employed?

    Hi all,

I've been unemployed pt/casual for about two years now with two different employers. I am currently on payroll of one but due to a new manager in that dept I haven't worked there since October. Over the last few weeks some freelance work has started to appear (fairly standard in this industry) but not a whole lot, maybe a day or two per month. I phoned the dole about this as I'm not going to be employed by these jobs, just a day here and there to see what the story would be. I now have an inspector insisting on seeing me and he seems to believe that he's caught me in a lie. He says I will have to register as self-employed, which I am happy enough to do I suppose but I need to be sure it's not going to cost me my job seekers to do so. As mentioned already, this is not going to amount to a huge amount of work or money but I'm keen to keep my hand in,so to speak, as with the industry I work in (theatre technician) the more people you are known to, the better.
    I'd appreciate any help. :-)
