Possibly not enough power for this build?

    Recently upgraded my PC to ;

    DX79SI mobo w/ an i7 3930k @ 3.2Ghz (no overclocking)
    2 x 4GB RAM gSkill sticks 2400mhz clock speed
    1 SATA Agility 3 HD
1 Ancient DVD drive running on an IDE to SATA converter.
    1 Radeon HD 7850 Sapphire

My PSU is a 650w supply, is this enough to comfortably run the above and about 4 USB devices? Using a website calculator I should be grand, but has anyone else had any strange happenings with a build like this when you're on your first few initial boots.

The whole PC basically crashed without a BSOD, everything slowed down quickly and then a restart. First I did was check temperatures etc, they were all fine. I knocked the CPU fan minimum upto 50% to be sure.

I ran an Intel CPU Diagnostic Tool check and it passed on everything with loads as far as I could tell that were 77%+

Everything seems fine now, have done multiple boots and it's all running nicely. I'm nervous though that when I go and run a game or something intensive it'll crash again.. so far youtube and running steam is about the most it's done.

Is 650w okay? I would have assumed so

Make and model of the PC or the PSU, it's self built and the PSU I have no idea.

It's happened again when I go to play a game, everything else is fine. I'm starting to think it might be the GPU.

Am gonna test out a few things and come back with more info

    edit ; update

Could be the Realtek audio drivers, ran Killing Floor fine. Yet cannot make it past DNF's intro screen. Going to try removing drivers first, then disabling audio on the game maybe.

edit ; Nevermind, turns out the issue with DNF was a game specific one, everything else working purrfectly.

Feel free to delete the thread

If it's a self built PC, you should be very much aware of what kind of PSU you have in there. Check it out. Even if you have your specific problem sorted out, I think you should still make sure that you have one of good quality that won't destroy your system.

Quality is far more important than wattage rating. 650W essentially means nothing on its own.

Have a read of my PSU post in my signature and find your PSU in the PSU review database.
