Centra, 7.30 Eur for one tub of ice cream

I strolled by Centra and picked up 2 tubs of Haagen Dazs ice cream. The shock I got when I was asked to hand over 15 euro... I assumed it was a mistake and asked them to check the price, but no - that's how much they charge.

I mean... am I wrong? That's a rip off, right?

Exact brand / variety: Haagen Dazs Dulce de Leche 500ml tub.

€5.85 in tesco for that one.

€5.99 for other Hagen daz 500ml varieties in superquinn.

So 21-25% more than the big supermarkets, sounds about right for a premium item like this, I would expect a box of milk tray to be a lot more in centra too.

Wikipedia regard centra as a convenience store, so would I, they could be making less margin than the supermarkets, my friend worked in a centra and many things were cheaper to get in supermarkets than from their supplier.

This price is not a shock to me. I am also unsure if you are calling centra or Hagen daz the rip off merchants here.

That price is correct. It was RRP 6.99, then the supplier put it up.

    Not Centras fault.

Standard price for that item. It's just so regularly reduced by the large supermarkets to 50% off, etc, you expect it cheaper. Ditto Ben & Jerrys.

I've bought the same item from convenience stores in the past for far cheaper. While I totally understand they're making less, I still can't get around what - to me - is an extortionate price.

I'm not sure where, who or even if I should pointing the finger at any one... I don't know who the rip off merchant is; I don't know who's responsible for bumping the prices along the way; I only know that I'm the one who ends up being asked to fork out the most in the end of the day!

Whether or not it was justified... that's my rant done with.

You would have bought it cheaper. As others have mentioned, it regularly goes on half price promotion so you may have got it for €3.99 at some stage.

If you pay full price for Premium ice cream these days then you're mental!! Always half price in at least one of the multiples. Plus Aldi and Lidl do nice equivalents for good value prices too.

Haagen Daaz and Ben&Jerrys are both unbelievable ripoffs, regardless of what the RRPs 'should' be.

Tescos have half price on some Ben&Jerrys at the moment, they often have offers on the other as well. There is no way I would ever pay full whack for one of these.

Aldi have some premium style in the same vein for much less, and the Lidl 1L ones in the big blue tub (especially their premium vanilla) is far nicer.

Just some icecream lore from an addict :D

    Check the price next time.

I looked for it and it wasn't properly listed. Turned out that they have different prices for different flavours of the same brand of ice cream. Each individually priced.

Another thing I found amusing, as anywhere else I've bought has had the same price for differing flavours of the same brand.

Same the world over I think, 6.99 here in the local supermarket (Albert Heijn) the normal price is "Second one half price" so 5.24 / tub of Ben and Jerrys.

Quality IMO has gone down hill over the years, you can get much better stuff from the non big name brands, Haagen Daz and Ben and Jerries is all marketing.

Its posh ice cream op, buy a cheaper one if you do not want to pay that much.

tesco's prices vary, your was 5.85, all the other 500mls are 6.10.

This price is high so you can expect a half price offer soon.

There was a thread in the snacks forum about expensive romanticas. I was saying the price was really high and to watch for offers. A few weeks on an it is half price now. They have to keep the price high for a few weeks to legally claim it is discounted.

"half price" has lost all meaning these days, its like the boy who cried wolf, when I was young it was rare to see stuff at half price, since it was genuine. "half price" takeaway pizza from the junkmail pizza places is a non-offer, while that half price chipper day is a genuine deal.

that is a rip off if ever i heard it, supervalue often do half price offers on hagen daaz ice cream, very regularly.

I wouldn't buy it full price, and I certainly wouldn't buy it in Centra / Spar / Mace etc.

You pay for the convenience though, I suppose.

That's scandalous... I like a bit of ice cream now and then, but I never buy Hadan Daz or B&Js, because they are a total rip off. Generally, I just buy the tesco own brand, which is less than half the price.

Haagen Daaz is €3.00 in Tesco at the moment on special.

Shouldn't have been a shock. Should have checked price before heading to the checkout. Yes, it's a rip off. It will continue to be a rip off till people decide they won't pay that price.

I would have left them at the counter and walked away.

Some is quick and easy to make.
Just keep frozen fruit - including bananas in skins and whizz it up with yoghurt, almond milk or some such, add ground nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds etc. according to taste.
Tastes wonderful and has no additives either.
