Why do schools make female students wear ties? Since I left school I've never need to knot a tie. What's with schools thinking 'Girls need to wear ties, it's part of the uniform'? I know not every school requires a tie or indeed a uniform but why make girls wear them?

Maybe they'll grow up and join the army or start another career where they must wear some other uniform that would require a tie.

it promotes uniformity and dampens the spirit of the bastard teenagers. I remember the few days we were allowed wear normal clothes in school there was a far more lively atmosphere about the place and even less than usual actually got done in class.

saying that **** ties. an uncomfortably warm, itchy and horrible looking uniform is fine but ties are a step too far.

It would be sexual discrimination not to enforce it for girls, surely?

it still exists in the workplace. the things women are allowed to wear to work are in no way comparable to men having to wear a shirt and tie. sandals in summer, ffs, when we have to wear shoes.

But what about all female schools? My school was female only.

No ties but much shorter skirts could be a possible solution

Whatever about female students, it isn't much better to make male students wear a tie. Especially those who start school at 4. I remember some foreigners visiting and being shocked by it. Ties are not so comfortable...and not everybody wears one when they've finished school. What if your dream is working on an oil rig and your forced to wear a tie your whole young life? Madness.

So they'll have something to spice up their sex lives when they've been married for ten years.

Maybe they should make students wear boiler suits.

I work in a 'professional' company and there is a 'business attire' requirement. At a recent large meeting I was bored, so I looked around the table at the 20 or so other guys and noticed only one of them wearing a tie.
The fact that this guy is undoubtedly the biggest dickhead there is, I feel, not coincidental.

Because, when you have a young boy going to school, mammy needs to teach him how to put on his tie.

And then she needs to do it for the husband, since we're incapable of doing it.

Also, why couldn't I wear a skirt to school?

When I was growing up the worst thing to happen to the girl's uniform in my school was the introduction of the horrible looking trousers instead of the skirts. Looked like they were made out of curtains.

I had to wear a tie as a girl and I didn't really care. It not like you had to reknot it every morning, no big deal.

Uniforms are really good for schools, less competition and less effort in the morning. I liked it, they weren't very comfortable but they beat having to think of something to wear so early in the morning each day!

The very essence of sexual discrimination there, not allowing boys to attend your school. What kind of a way is that to teach children equality?

    Actually, that does sound comfortable.

A tie in itself is a pretty stupid concept but it does look good with school uniforms on either gender.

school uniforms are in the main designed to make schoolgirls look awful, for fairly obvious reasons.

I've always been fairly anti-uniform myself, but I'm sure school would be a fashion parade without it and a sore trial to the poorer kids who couldn't compete.

I hated my uniform. I hate working in companies with business atire rules. Women can pretty much wear what they like but strict rules on guys.
School had seriously strange rules. You couldn't tie your hair back it is was long as the headmaster thought it looked wrong. Had a run in with him in metal work when he grabbed my pony tail while I was working at a lade. If a student had done it the teacher would have suspended him. I flipped at the head master and was held back by other students. He never bothered me again as he knew he would be in serious trouble.
