Thanks for that, just caught the last half hour or so, was very interesting. There was a reference to something he said about Sean Kelly earlier, anyone hear that?

yes, he heard pills jangling in his pocket at the start of a race, kelly was pulled up for doping later. Walsh regrets not mentioning it when he was writing his book about Kelly. Ditto Roche being in the epo files of a certain Dr.

Yes. An Irish fella asked him whether there might be a Lance Armstrong story in Kelly or Roche. So he told the story about hearing pills rattling in Kelly's pocket just before a race (after which he tested positive). Walsh was basically saying that he was a massive fan of Kelly, so he left all that out of the biography he was writing at the time. He was saying that he was young and grew up a lot since then, and when Roche was implicated in 1992, he reported that properly.

I read about that recently and it made me remember during the summer on a race day at sundrive velodrome I had a couple of different pills in my bag, vitamin c and magnesium,

got a funny look from one of the older guys on my team, he knew they were vitamins but jokingly said not to be doin that out in the open as it looks dodgey! Im all paranoid now. they were in the proper containers and I felt it was best not to be hiding them as that would look even more dodgey.

Same thing about the pills was in thd Kimmages interview I linked to last week, but then again himself and Walsh were with each other at the time.

It's well worth reading Paul Kimmage's Rough Ride with current events in mind. Especially after McQuaid's latest bs today in trying to rubbish Walsh and Kimmage and Greg LeMond. I know who I believe.

mega dosage vitamin c is great for buffering lactic acid, do no pros use it or would they have it in their liquids?

I am very uneasy about pointing a finger at someone becasue you heard 'pills' ...they were not seen and properly identified - could have been anything...Sure Kelly was caught at a later date and paid the price , but I would like to think we live in a world where evidence is necessary to convict someone...no matter how idolised you now are ,it doesn't mean everything you say is always right and therefore should not be said without proper evidence ...hearsay and speculation is not evidence

Also McQuiad has a very unfortunate and arrogant manner himself but I agree that there is a process for electing UCI presidents, through national nomiation and election....a democratic route ...self nomination and selectin is also arrogant and I don't care how good a cyclist you were ( and I like Le Mond)

I was referring more to Kimmage's general discussion of 'hot' races where tired pros resort to doping to survive to earn a crust before ending up on the scrap heap. Whether you agree with his views on motivation or not is not the issue, the issue is that the UCI let it happen on their watch. People like Walsh and Kimmage want the sport to recognise this and change, as 'hot' races lead to 'hot' grand tours too. Why does McQuaid always blame a journalist or a rider and not the 'f@cked' up system/pro environment?

Kelly was caught for doping for the very race he was about to start when they heard the pills rattling.

According to Cillian Kelly on Velocast it was at a later date ...

It's possible Walsh is pulling his punches here. He may have known more or maybe he really did just 'hear' pills in Kelly's pocket which seems very odd to be fair.

I didn't hear Walsh but I heard Cillian Kelly on velocsat 'History of Cycling'recount Kimmage's story (he was with Walsh) and it was as I recall 'heard pills' ...

Kimmage and Walsh have done a great job pursuing the story of doping in cycling often to the detriment of their own lives/careers....but their story does not make them infallible …Nor is every accusation by Tyler Hamilton gospel….just as Pat McQuiad is not the devil incarnate…..

Kelly and Roche will take the brunt of doping speculation from this time as it seems to originate from Irish journalists ….and given the context of the time there is probably justification for this speculation…but I would like to believe that it is innocent till proven guilty
