So was buying truf off our local farmer the other day when he mentioned that it was last years and that he had a heap of it. I nearly pissed myself as all I could picture was this fella. Anyways, cheered me up for the day, poor farmer didn't know what was going on. Just thought I'd share.

What's the gag? Is turf not one of those things that 'heap' is the apposite collective noun for?

As opposed to....a pile of flammable material ?

It absolutely is the apposite but as you may know I derive pleasure from making up far more inappropriate collective nouns.

Such as a "pride" of stairs, a "genocide" of chip-pans (copyright Chuck Stone) and so on.

    But I digress.

I believe the OP is inferring that an unsuspecting farmer unwittingly uttered, word for word, the "farmer baby" meme. I don't believe him.

After 30 years of endurance for my parents in the homeplace I beg to differ with your romantic notions.

Hauling turf from the shed, buying firelighters, newspapers and bits of timber to try to get the friggin thing going. Every time the room is filling with smoke and when its finally going, half the heat disappearing up the chimney.

Anyway, thankfully for the parents, the lit fire is no more and they are all the better for it.

Its an oil stove, press the button and anyway it goes. The smiles on their faces says it all.

That's a problem with the draw in the chimney, not the fault of the poor ould turf.

Well seasoned turf in a good stove or range with a good draft can easily heat a five bedroom house (rads and water) all on their own.

Sounds like a right bunch of amateurs. The rest of mankind managed to tame fire about a quarter of a million years ago.

It is actually very easy to light a turf fire. You just need to positiion the turf correctly! The correct balance is crucial.

If the room fills with smoke, then you need to clean your chimney....
