Advice on lens for Canon 1100D

Recently bought a Canon 1100D that came with the normal kit lens (EFS 18-55mm) and although I'm very happy with everything I'd like to get a better quality lens to use as an all rounder. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to the DSLR's and I'd like recommendations from people on a decent lens.

Basically I'll be photographing everything from landscapes, portraits, indoor, outdoor, etc and my max budget is 250-350 approx, although I might be able to stretch that if a lens was highly recommended. My ideal lens is probably the Canon 24-105mm L but that is well outside my price range. Would love opinions and advice on this, thanks.

Tamron do a lovely 17-50 f2.8 lens which would suit for most normal everyday use on a crop sensor like 1100D. You can often find them on adverts.ie for about 250. Its a great lens and having f2.8 is so handy. Coming from the 18-55 kit lens you wont know yourself with the Tamron, its a beauty!!

Thanks splinters, as I'm a bit lost here could you explain what you mean by crop sensor? I know about full frame cameras which match 35mm film but does it mean that certain lenses won't be suitable for my camera because its "crop" sensor? Thanks for the advice.

No if anything its the other way around. Your camera can take both EF and EF-S lens. Full frame Canon cameras can only take EF lens. Also bear in mind that because its a crop sesor you're not getting the exact focal length the lens claims. Your is a 1.6 crop sensor so to get the effective focal range just multiply everything by 1.6. So your 18 - 55 is actually 29 - 88 on your camera. The actual value on the lens, 18-55 is assuming you're using a full frame. To be fair its actually quite a bit more in depth then that, but thats it in a nutshell. Main point, you can use both EF and EF-S lenses without any worries.
