We have a technomate with all English channels but have no Irish ones.... Is it possible to get one with JUST the Irish channels? We don't want the technomate to go to waste and any boxes I've looked into will just give us the same channels we already have plus the Irish ones... Hope this makes sense, I am clueless on this tech stuff....

    A Saorview box? http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/

It will need to be connected to a UHF aerial, of a type suitable for signal conditions at your location.

Or maybe your tv is capable of decoding the Saorview signal & you haven't tried connecting it to an aerial? Post the make & model here if you want someone to check.

But aren't the saorview boxes going to pick up the same channels as the Technomate as well? Is there a basic box which will simply provide the Irish channels?

The technomate is Tm-5200D and the TV is a philips....something. I'm trying to sort this for my parents so will have to double check the make tomorrow but I'm fairly certain the tv isn't capable of bringing in the channels....

    Thanks... I'm a disaster

no your not. the technomate is a satelllte reciver so only picks up the channels on satellite that are free to air. the saorview box picks up the irish digital terrestial via an aerial and your right, if you live near border it will pick up uk freeview tv as well. thats just a fluke same as old tv's with vhf and uhf tuners.

    you dont give your location

Right on the border - Dundalk. So we may go ahead with a saorview box and get rid of the technomate :) hopefully will come accross someone who wants it, would just hate to see it going to waste

ah that explains it, why not have 2 boxes, there may be channels on the satellite that wont be on freeview? and that box can be used to record as well. so you could watch one and record another, that wont be possible with a saorview box yet.

and its a good quality box ie picture wise.

no one will want it as its all hd now. By the way you could get a combo box, ie get rte and bbc and the sat stuff.

    have a little think

Saorview is the Irish digital terrestrial service. It doesn't include any UK channels, but the receivers can decode the standard definition UK services. The UK terrestrial service is called Freeview & in most cases you need 2 aerials to get both, with the feeds combined before they get to the receiver.

Getting the full Freeview service in Dundalk might require some investment in your aerial system, particularly now with interference caused by the Saorview transmissions from Mt. Leinster.

Do you have a TV aerial on hour house or just a dish?
How old is the TV aerial, if any?

What exact model of technomate do you have? Do you have recording?
