A Little Problem

I have an old banger, 2000 Punto ELX.

Just had it serviced and they said it was in great nick.

Anyway, every time I turn the wheel to full lock either left or right, The power steering goes and the warning light comes on and its really heavy to drive. I leave the car for a while and start it up and sometimes it starts fine with no warning and power steering fine but other times theres the light and its gone again????

There's also a warning light on for the bulbs even though they are all fine but this goes off when the wheel locks too.

I've no idea but kind of looks like electrical but I could be wrong. Anyone ever come across this or have any idea.

I looked in the Manual to check the light and it says Electric Power Steering Fault

Power steering problems are probably one of the most typical faults with a Punto of that era. You're looking for a new power steering motor unit or you can attempt to fix it yourself. However you may need to fix it again tomorrow if you do that (sorry DGT :-) ) According to the article linked from below it is most likely either some broken solder joints or other contact problems.

Could be the alternator is on the way out.

Most likely the common steering angle sensor fault which requires a new electric power steering unit/steering column to repair. From memory the part is something like €400odd from Fiat.

A duff battery causes the power steering unit to fail during driving.

As ND has pointed out more than likely the angle sensor which can be fixed by opening up the unit and soldering it back. I can't find the guide though....

What a stupid idea from Fiat though, the old hydraulic PAS never gave any bother and was light enough anyway, those units are nothing but trouble! :(

Right just done a diagnostics on it had a mechanic look at it and he said I need an electric steering motor. said its gonna cost 600-700 euro new.

Said I could get a used one and would be half the price.

I have no idea what the part number is or have no idea what exact one i'd need, theres loads on the net to buy.

    Any advice

    Would this be one??

Ignore that price, they are such a common fault but that has it's benefits - cheapness! Here's a tonne of them on eBay starting at €80 with shipping. A local breakers should charge you no more than €100 to €150 - if he does, tell him to feck off :) And even better, the younger sister has a few for sale too, look on Adverts below.

Just back from a shop where I got a used column for €70 and he gave me a three month warranty on it.

Rang the mechanic, said he'd do it for €150

    Sound Reasonable?????

Your mechanic is not wrong in telling you that the whole column needs to be replaced as the the new part comes all as one piece and its how Fiat repair them.

However, as dgt said, they can be stripped and repaired, although very few garages will do it.

As for €150 for fitting the column...well its an hour job tops so unless he has a very expensive hourly rate then its a bit high IMO but then this will often be the case when customers supply their own parts.

Got me one, new steering motor was all that was needed, works a treat.

Funny though, took out the motor, and on the little white sticker it has SERVICE PART OK, then in red pen beside it it says BAD.

    Somebody new it was fooked!

Maybe they went home and decided they'd just fix it again tomorrow.

    Sorry, couldn't resist! :)
