RTE and religion

The RTE news twitter account just retweeted a message from the Pope.

    https://twitter.com/rtenews

Have they retweeted other religious leaders? I doubt it.

Surely I'm not the only one who finds this, at best, odd or, at worst, downright disgraceful

I realise this could be some junior in charge of the account and it may be a simple error but I'd like to know the views of others

If this is the worst thing to happen to you today, then count yourself lucky.

A simple solution to the problem of your disgust might be not to follow the rte twitter newsfeed.

TO be clear, I was asking if others found it disgraceful. I'm closer to thinking its 'odd'

I just don't think a TV station should show any religious (or political bias)

RTE have a definite religious bias. Wasn't there a thread on here about the Angelus recently?

The BBC have an entire news story about his tweet, is that even worse?

It would bother me more if they felt that they couldn't re-tweet it for fear of offending this anti-religion crowd.

I don't think so. To be honest I'm more on the "that's a bit odd" side than the 'downright disgraceful' side

I'm guessing others see it as more newsworthy than me. But AFAIK RTE news havemn't retweeted any other individuals/organisaton, thats why I found it weird

Well why can BBC report it and RTE can't mention it?

Well in fairness the Angelus is the most gripping show on RTE and has been for some time..its all about the ratings man

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kraggy

OP, it's simply because he opened his account this/last week. That's why it's newsworthy.

    I doubt they'll make it a habit.

Again, it was more the direct retweeting of it that struck me as odd. If they had a story "the Pope has started to tweet..." such as BBC had I probably wouldn't even notice.

The 'oddness' was the fact that they retweeted it, something they don't usually do

I posted here to see if others agreed/disagreed

No. I'd find it odd if they retweeted the Archbishop of Canterbruy though (and only him).

But right enough I'd be more interested in what happens in Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

It's twitter. They can only use a certain amount of characters in each tweet, nearly all of which was used to retweet the Pope. There was not much else to say.

Also, what other major religious figures started using Twitter after RTE did? The only one that comes close is the Dali Lama, and I remember a news story on that. There isn't really any others that the public would know.

Good point. Can't criticise them too much for bias when there's no similar situation to compare it too

But, on the other hand, RTE would have a predominantly Catholic audience. So there would be a certain amount of bias to that, possibly to a slightly lesser extent that the Royals on BBC.

It was a big news story on twitter. What would the popes first tweet be. RTE news are reporting the news, not religious propaganda, big difference. They're doing their job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,329 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Wonder how many people followed the pope out of curiosity have now unfollowed after seeing his last 2 tweets?

Unless the Holy Father is tweeting an image of an altar boy wearing leaderhosen fisting him over an SS grave then I am not interested.

The Pope is the leader of the single biggest religion on Earth, that is why his first tweet is more newsworthy than the first tweet of the Moderator of the Non Subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland.

Just as how RTE retweeted Barack Obama after his election victory a few months ago but didn't retweet anything from Algirdas Butkevičius after he was elected Prime Minister of Lithuania a few days later.

Are you equating the State broadcaster with individual posters on an open internet forum?

You don't see a difference there?

When most of the posters are anti-religious, "individual" doesn't come into it.

People pushing agendas bore me, whether that agenda be pro or anti religion.

Send them a letter of complaint, or stand outside RTE and wave a placard, I would if I weren't more concerned with more important issues like counting dots on the wall-paper.

The only things drifting aimlessly around in my field of vision are some of the posters on here.:P

I make certain that the wallpaper has static dots before I start counting.

Its not disgraceful, the absolute majority of people in this country are Catholic. Do you think they read out tweets from Jewish or Hindu leaders in Saudi Arabia or iraq? Or Buddihit tweets in Mexico? No, tweets from a certain religious leader will be read out in a country where that leaders religion is the majority or atleast very prevalent.

I'm not sure we should be holding up Saudi Arabia or Iraq as models to follow here
