U.S. Formally Recognizes Syria's Main Rebel Group.

In other words the US under Barack Obama now officially supports the mass slaughter of innocent children, civilians and the persecution and murder of minority Christians. This can also mean one thing and is that Russia and Iran will join forces with Assad's team.

Interesting and possibly hair raising times ahead of us.

The coalition's relative success—Western diplomats say they have started to work with it to engage local councils in the country—has created a genuine momentum for the rebels that had evaporated over the past six months as fighting ripped through Syria and the army resorted to heavier weapons.

Tuesday's move came as senior U.S. officials warned that Syria's civil conflict threatens to degenerate into a battle between al Qaeda-backed militias and Iranian militants and their proxies, a risk that has created new urgency for the U.S. and allies to accelerate a political transition.

There'd likely be a similar thread created by someone else here if they chose to support Assad.

What do you mean by "Join forces"? They already support him.

One thing I have learned from watching too many films is that if you want to force someone to do something you make friends with their enemy.

US is just blackmailing Assad to toe the line, nothing to see here.

when is a terrorist group not a terrorist group? when its being backed by the world police.

How is it a bad thing that the US is recognising the legitimacy of the Syrian opposition as ‘representatives of the people’? They are. Assad is a dictator who has violently suppressed his own people. Would you rather nothing happened until Assad has killed most of the population? Not much point in supporting the will of the people then.

You would have a point if you wrote ‘when is a dictator not a dictator? When he’s being backed the world police’. As Assad was for the past few decades.

Here’s another rhetorical question: when it is ‘legitimate’ to recognise that ‘the will of the people’ – one of those democratic concepts – is to remove a brutal dictator?

Sometimes I open these threads with the expectation of seeing images of wee-wees and a poll asking who has the biggest one.
