back up computer to external hard drive ?

    i bought a 500gb external hard drive today in harvey norman for 50 quid to back up my computer so i can then save my files,programs,music(basicly everything)on my computer to a new computer im getting under warrenty if ya get me.

    i tried doing it but an error came up.this is what i did:
    i tried to backup these files:
    data files: -back up data for newely created users
    -my libraries
    computer: - windows(C:)
    - data(D:)
    then i got this error:The file directory is corrupted and unreadable.
    details:the request could not be performed because of an I/O error.

    does anyone know how can i do this properly or whats wrong?

    What are you using to backup?
