I'm planning to buy a used car from a private seller, but it hasn't been taxed since June. What should my next move be as I don't want to be liable for 6 months car tax

You're only liable for tax from when you buy it.

    Slight correction...

From the 1st of the month in which you buy it.

You could wait to receive back the new Registration document in your name, this could take up to 2 weeks, and if you took a chance and drove the car with tax expired in June, you "could " be in a bit of bother if you're stopped, a better option is bring the old owner's Registration book into motor tax office, they will let you tax it and will change ownership for you as well.It will still take 2 weeks to get your hands on the new book, but it will be taxed and in your name on the system. The guy you are buying from might want to come with you to the motor tax office to insure you change the ownership correctly.

the guy you are buying it from would be silly to let you out of his sight with the VLC. Otherwise, as per the first two replies. Could a mod sticky this in inch high flashing neon maybe? or maybe not, it's to my advantage that many other private buyers are afraid of cars out of tax...
