Bans galore after Clare hurling minor final

    From the Indo:
DUBLIN senior hurling manager Anthony Daly has received a four-week ban for the unruly scenes that marred the end of this year's Clare minor hurling final and the investigation has also resulted in swingeing fines for the clubs involved. Kerry's new senior hurling boss Tommy Howard – who also manages Clarecastle – has been hit even harder, receiving an eight-week ban that looks likely to affect his early involvement with the Kingdom.
Niall Romer of Kilmaley was also hit with an eight-week ban, while Daly and fellow Clarecastle selector Stephen Sheedy got a month each.
Both managers had been sent off by the referee at the time ....... Both clubs were also hit with €3,000 fines.
What the hell happened for all those bans to be handed out??!

Ah j@ysus where were you for the October Bank Holiday weekend? It was a slow weekend so a fight at a minor match in Clare made a lot of the red top papers. Long story short, Howard went after Romer, Daly went after Romer and Sheedy went after Romer as well, don't think that Romer is a saint though :)

If you are on Facebook, the Clare Courier has pictures of the whole thing online https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.3447888215794.111060.1828352385&type=3

Bans galore? A couple of 4 weekers and an 8 weeker over over the holidays? Thing of nowt, and barely more than a schemozzle.

It really does make a mockery of it. What's to stop the individuals doing it again if they're not even punished? Only one has a ban that will affect him in anyway.

I had just submitted my Ph.D. thesis so I hadn't heard about it! :o :P

So you think managers/selectors getting bans (regardless of when they come into effect) are 'things of nowt'? Great attitude there

Sorry, but these things should not be happening on the sideline of a GAA pitch.

True, that's why they were punished.

If you click fast on the link you can get a image of all the actions, pretty damning of Tommy Howard, Daly, and Sheedy. The Clarecastle sub that came on the field was as bad as any of them.. ..I don't know why Romer was suspended. I can't see him attacking anyone?

A 4 week ban in december/january......why I supported the idea a few years ago of having a minimum number of games missed.......

ie: 4 week ban (must miss at least 1 game), 8 week ban (must miss at least 2 games)

Setting bans by time period only is ridiculous in a sport where a team can have 5 weeks between matches.

agree 100%. sure Johnny Maher in Galway will miss no game either. joke of a system

5 weeks? Sure Dublin haven't played since July, and won't play again til February.

Obviously yes after the season has ended......but I was referring to it in the middle of the season....for example, Kilkenny played the League final on may 6th this year, their next competitive match was June 23rd in the Leinster Championship.

Lads, while I agree the idea of basing bans on timelines rather than games is outdated and needs to be looked at, it is wrong to suggest that the people who have received these bans will go unpunished anyone handed down a ban must miss at least one game whether it is within the timeframe of the ban or not.

This was a TOTAL cop out bu the Clare Minor Board.

Daly's Freshers hurling team in LIT played their league final last week. Suspension announced now so that there is no impact on his managerial career.

It was fair that Romer and Howard should get longer suspensions based on them being named in the referee's report but the length of the suspensions is farcical. If a player deliberately hit some one he would get at least 3 months.

It would be great if they appealed it to the Munster Council.

A Freshers Hurling League Final? Not the most relevant of games on the yearly fixtures calendar.

I'm pretty sure The Higher Education Fresher Hurling League Division 1 Finals meant a lot to the players, coaches and managers involved.

I have no doubt it is, Gods make their own importance etc, but to suggest a GAA conspiracy involving an intercounty manager and suspensions committee to ensure a manager is on the line for it is a bit much. I'm sure they'd all have struggled on through it without Daly if they had to.

I agree with you there; I just wanted to point out that that match would have been important to a lot of people.

The "suggestion" is that the Clare Minor Board is spineless. I think the Fresher's League is totally irrelevant but how a final that was played at the end of October can take 5 weeks to be dealt with is a joke. Then punishment is announced after all competitions are over.

Jason Stokes father got 96 weeks for running on to the pitch and striking a player. Daly and Sheedy get 4!!!!

Hold your horses there.... Daly and Sheedy did not strike a player. I know it wasn't intended to read that way but it does.
