Die Hard Question

Something which has always bothered me about Die Hard. Just after John figures out the phone lines are cut he looks around the floor of the building a bit more. Then he looks across to another building and sees a girl walking around her apartment on the phone. They make a point of showing her near her window.

My question is what's the significance of this? It doesn't give McClane any ideas or information, and I can't figure out if it's supposed to be symbolic of anything.

To show the phone lines are working in other buildings and the ones in Nakatomi were cut.

anyway Die Hard is fcuking awesome, don't question it.

If it was a network outage, it wouldn't be just have been Nakatomi being affected.

Ha, Die Hard could never happen now, everyone would be on twitter and facebook getting word out they've been taken hostage 2 minutes after the terrorists arrived.

How many people started watching Die Hard on plus 1 after spotting this topic? :D

I always took it as a great little moment that helped build McClane's character - he's got the oul wanderin eye (see also the girls on the poster on the wall) - it explains the marriage problem, why his wife moved away, why he is just the right guy for having in the wrong place at the wrong time: he hates himself and just needs an excuse to take it all out on someone...

I flicked it on between programmes and had to laugh at how young Bruce looks in this and how his physique "ballooned" over the years and sequels. He looked like a normal bloke back then.

Why does Gruber say 'Schiest dem fensters, Karl' and then when Karl looks confused he repeats it in English?

    What a movie.

Shoot the glass? I think it was for 2 reasons,
    1. Karl didn't understand the logic of shooting the glass, which was to seriously wound the barefoot McClain. Gruber did and it strengthens his role as head villain, evil and intelligent.
    2. For us non German speakers to understand what he is saying.

I'm glad my simple question has brought so much joy :pac:

Yea, it was on Film Four. I watch Die Hard every year at Christmas, but when it came on last night I found myself thinking "Is it too early, should I wait?". I didn't.

Ah I miss casual swearing in action movies.

what do people think of the sequels? 2 is ok not great, With A Vengeance is brilliant and 4.0 is pants.

2 is silly, 3 is a prime slice of 90's action, 4 is a good action movie but it's no Die Hard.

"Just like fùckin' Saigon, hey, Slick?"

2 is ok. Still very much a Die Hard film. 3 is excellent. 4 is grand, a few stupid bits in it, but overall enjoyable enough. Personally looking forward to 5. I don't care how much they milk it, as long as it has Bruce Willis playing McClane it's all good with me.

Class. I'm gonna have to go home this evening and watch this again! For about the 20th time. It never ever gets old! I got it on BluRay last christmas and never got round to watching it!

As for the sequels, I remember liking the first sequel at the time. I was young and impressionable, but it hasn't aged well at all IMO. It's really really cheesy (the dialog between McClane and the guys in the control tower... Colm Meaney as the British pilot...). I wasn't mad on the 3rd and the 4th was absolute pants. I've seen the trailer for the 5th and it looks like the 4th all over again.

The original is timeless, a bloody masterpiece that will never be bettered for its genre.

It always surprises me how much Die Hard 2 gets panned - I think it's great and much better than 3, which is also decent... Obviously the first movie is just an all-time movie classic... but I really like DH2 as well I must say...

love the fight between John and Karl, brutal 80's violence at its best.

I'd agree to an extent. I don't think 3 is all that much better than 2.
Both of them are obviously inferior to DH and much better than DH4 though.

Not strong?? What could possibly be stronger than a man who does some kinda martial-art style yoga bollock nekid in his hotel room before taking over an airport?!

Hans Gruber, the best movie villain ever. Some quality dialogue...
It's a very nice suit Mr. Takagi, it would be a shame to ruin it...

I wanted this to be professional, efficient, adult, cooperative. Not a lot to ask. Alas, your Mr. Takagi did not see it that way... so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life.

I LOVE Die Hard 2!!! Saw it one Christmas when I very young and just stuck with me.

Also love 'With a Vengeance'. Great title! Non-stop from minute one! Class.

"Nice suit...John Phillips London, I have two myself"

Movie villains dont have that kinda of panache anymore.

"'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except... the four assholes coming in the rear in standard two-by-two cover formation."

100% agreed! A villain with genuine charisma. A real rarity in movies these days.
Only one that's come close in recent memory was Philip Seymour Hoffmann in MI-3. He was superb in that, but still, Rickman in DH is the king. Compare him to the bad guy in DH 4. A forgettable wet fish.

Jeremy Irons in 3 was good too. the uncut version of it is great, all the swearing, and that crazy bit where the blonde chick stabs the guy with the sickle in the neck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,943 ✭✭✭✭the purple tin

Original is a great film, definitely Bruce's best role

2 and 3 were both good also.

Die hard 4 was a ok-ish action flick with a few good moments

What I never understood was when the SWAT team are going into the building they bring out torches to cut the locks instead of breaking the glass.
