    Hi Folks,

The tools I think I will need for basic servicing at the moment, oil drain, oil/air/fuel and sparks. On two different cars 00 Corolla 1.4 and 08 VW 1.9TDI

    Oil filter removal tool
    Socket for sump plug
Screwdrivers/torx drivers for removing covers etc
Sockets possibly for getting access under bits

Does that sound about right above?

This looks like good value set? Gets largely positive reviews and life time guarantee for most parts.

    http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_173083_langId_-1_categoryId_212410

    Thanks,
    MAJJ

Its an excellent set, i have one myself. You'll also need a set of axle stands and possibly a hydrolic car jack just for ease of use.

Dont get under a car without axle stands or ramps.

The Halford Pro Kit is fantastic.

I also got mine reduced from €250 to €125.

The only thing I didn't like about it though was the lack of a deep 16mm socket for doing spark plugs. Other than that, it's great :)

EDIT: I think it's a lifetime guarantee for non-moving parts only...

You may want a torque wrench also as a bolts may have a required torque specified.
For the people who have the above set, how good is the case it comes with? I have a couple of cheaper sets but the bits are always falling out of their places so it drives me nuts!

The VAG tdi has a cartridge type filter doesn't it?
You may also need a big socket to fit the plastic cover.
I would also look at a pair of longnose pliers and a magnetic pickup tool for when you drop something in an inaccessible place (or oil drain pan)
This kit is pretty good value

The case is pretty good. i really like this set althought i paid 150 for it in the summer, worth the money thou. ya a torque wrench is very handy, i've never had to use a oil filter wrench, just hand tight, nevery been a problem

Thanks Cletus good to get the feedback on the set and for sure, safety first! I have another thread in here with lots of great advice from boardsies on stands versus ramps.

No issue with the case really. It's strong and durable.

Nearly everything pretty much stays in place (bar the odd time the smaller sockets may move but that's due to their small size and moving the case around).

Just with regards to the axle stands you may not necessarily need them.

On my own car I can park one side of it on the kerb and fit under, its bit of tight squeeze but managable.

Just so this isn't taken the wrong way if you are jacking the car to get under you need axle stands.

Re. the halfords case, i've had no issues, although in general people seem to complain about the hinges breaking. My case lives on my workbench, so not really an issue. If you plan on moving it around a lot, hold onto the piece of foam that comes with it, it prevents the sockets (which dont clip in, unlike the stuff in the lid) from falling around.

Last point, dont open it upside down ;)

If you mean the oil filter yes it's not one of those dome shaped metal ones, it slots in to the plastic holder. Showing all my extensive knowledge there :)

Good tip as I will surely drop stuff that I need back where I don't want it falling into!

Hard for me to compare like with like on that other one but would prefer a local one if any issues, shipping might be high as it will be heavy too.

    Thanks for all the help.

9.95 for up to 30kg from that company.
Cormie on here bought some of those sets no issues as far as I know.

As others have said, that Halfords set is great quality as is the case imho..

I've never liked those oil filter wrenches so I have a set of large spanners and some large sockets which are sooo much easier to use.

You might consider a set of ramps too for easy safe access underneath the car.
