G-mail security question

Not sure where to post this but I'll try here.

Basically, I've been having a bit of a headache with a guy who seemed to be cyber stalking me. I worked at a company for a few months and this IT guy who worked there, who I barely knew, abused his position by getting my private email address from the system (I'd logged in at work) and e-mailing me after I'd left to ask how I was. At the time, this didn't seem so weird as he was friendly enough but he later added me on Twitter (no idea how he found that account, it's not my real name and not linked to anything) and then sent me a semi-weird e-mail where he implied I was being rude for not having e-mailed him - I barely knew him! He was an acquaintance at best.

After that, I got paranoid, blocked him and changed all my passwords and tried to forget about it. The other day, I realised that with Gmail, you can check your account activity and where you'd logged in from. I was horrified to see that apparently, I'd logged in from the United States. I haven't been there for years...does this mean someone has hacked into my e-mail? Your man immediately came to mind, but he doesn't live in the US, as far as I know. Is there any way this could have been a simple mistake? I'm so freaked out and angry now. I have all kinds of personal stuff going to that email...

Could well be not as bad as you think. There IP address database may not be to date. Our you could have logged in via a company network etc which is registered to a US IP

If you put the IP address in here: http://whois.domaintools.com/, it will tell you what company it's registered to. It might return an ISP, which isn't very useful, but it might also be registered to a company, which might let you know where you might have accessed it.

Also, you could enable two-step authentication on your Google account. Any time it's accessed from a new PC, you would need an additional password which is sent to your phone
