Stiffening Crochet

I've been doing some crochet ornaments and I'd like to stiffen them to hang on Christmas trees. US sites say to use something called Mod-Podge diluted, is that like PVA glue? Would it be easier just to use spray starch?

Never did it myself but my elderly auntie used to use a solution of sugar and water but I don't know the measurements. I found a recipe here though, http://www.ehow.com/how_7715224_use-sugar-starch-crochet-cotton.html

She used it on crocheted baskets. The one she gave me is still standing after 35 years! Modern starch might be good too though.

Jellybaby is right about sugar water - we used to stiffen those 50's net underskirts with it too, rather dangerous in summer as they got sticky and attracted wasps!

PVA would be a reasonable alternative to modgepodge, though I think it would spoil the crochet - i think it would fill up the holes in the stitches?

Liquid starch (robin) might work, I don't think spray starch would be strong enough.

Dylon also do a fabric spray starch. I've never tried it myself but seen it in tesco and was curious.

PVA diluted with water works a treat. I had some stuff called Aleene's fabric stiffener and that's all it was!
