Dairy free protein shakes

Is there such a thing as dairy free protein shakes? As i understand it whey is a byproduct of milk and thus it is dairy.

I want to cut out my dairy consumption in the new yr except for the small amount I may add to coffee. I usually would have a pint at breakfast and a litre plus between lunch and dinner.

So has anybody got any tasty recommendations for a dairy free protein shake if they are available??

    cheers

    frAg

Think myprotein.co.uk does pea extract ones. A lactose free one might be as good. Mix ON gold whey with water, it's an isolate like some other shakes.

You could buy ON egg protein. Egg protein will taste better then pea.

I think with pea you need to use brown rice protein to balance the amino acids you are getting.

This is sort of what I tried to discuss here before, but it got into a vegan vs meat thing.

anyways dairy free or vegan proteins, There are rice, wheat, hemp, pea, soy and mixed vegan proteins out there.

    check out http://www.rosnutrition.com/ie/home
They're a new company and I've only found them but they have rice proteins and hemp.
    both cheap but unflavoured.

You could also try wheat protein, it's supposed to be good and taste/mix good too it comes in chocolate flavour. The supplement shop on Aungier st. sells it. Think its under 30€ for a tub.

    No it isn't. It's a blend.

I think that would annoy me tbh. Every shake would remind me of the fact that I could be eating a steak.

I think your approach is flawed.

Sure, limiting dairy may be "good" but if it was a significant enough issue the first place to look is your normal milk in the coffee.

Most people with milk allergies tend to be lactose intolerant, a sugar which is mostly removed as part of the purification of whey. So, if that's your concern, it probably shouldn't stop you using whey.

And the fact you're coming down from drinking so much milk to nothing at all is probably a sure fire sign not to just throw the baby out with the bath water imo.

    Just another perspective to consider.

If you're lactose intolerant here's the answer:

The exact same as lactase drops but you don't have to order them online & half the price. 4 drops per litre of milk, works a treat!

I'm not lactose intolerant. I could fill a small lake with the amount of milk I have drank in my lifetime!! It's more about a new approach to healthy living and some weight loss I want to achieve. Have read conflicting

I guess I'm looking for a healthy balance so I'm looking at it from a different angle and not through the bottom of a milk stained pint glass.

just cut down on dairy then?
The only dairy related stuff I get is from whey shakes. I don't use butter and drink coconut milk.
But even just stop drinking milk by itself if you think its unhealthy. everything in moderation?

Hey frag420, just wondering did you get anywhere with this? I know this is nearly two years old but I need to go dairy free and cut it out without issue but the weight loss is dramatic and unwanted. I normally supplement with whey protein but that's out now I'm dairy intolerant. Just wondering did you find any solutions? I've tried brown rice protein which was disgusting and moving onto egg protein but looking for ideas

Are you dairy intolerant or lactose intolerant?

    Cow's milk to be exact

I got the sunwarrior protein from iherb...It's rice based.

I used pea protein from bulkpowders, it's pretty horrible though. I mixed it with rice milk and a banana, even then it wasn't great.

I tried the brown rice protein from bulk powders but no matter what I mixed it with was vile. Will see how I get on with egg from ON but am leaning toward the beef protein from bulkpowders. Reviews for the flavoured variety are all good

Look up the beef protein from bulkpowders.

If you're lactose intolerant, normal whey protein contains minimal amounts of lactose. Whey Isolate contains trace amounts.

A glass of milk wrecks me but Whey Isolate and water is fine.

I think you missing my point.
If you are lactose intolerant, you could be ok with whey isolate as the sugars (lactose) are removed.
If it's an issue dairy in some other regard, then it might not be suitable.

    Thanks Mellor,

I did a home test which came back highly intolerant to dairy, minor for wheat and yeast. So, I got a second opinion as I wasn't giving up cheese without a fight and went for the full Fitzwilliam test which came back the same and specifically came back with a strong reaction to cow's milk and all products derived from it. Since dropping dairy from the diet (which was easier than I thought it would be - thank you almond milk), I'm sleeping better, not developing sinus problems, snoring has subsided, skin has mostly cleared and I generally have more energy. The major side effect I've seen is that my weight has plummeted. I'm very active which might take account for why I've burned off so much so quickly but I need to supplement with something and there is only so much I food I can eat in one day so am looking at protein as I've used it before when in heavy training to maintain my weight. So, long story short, whey is out.

I have ordered a sample of beef protein from bulkpowders to give it a whirl.

Thanks everyone for the responses, nice to see a 2 year old thread can be revived!

    That's the stuff I use(d), wanna buy half a bag? :)

I use the sunwarrior blend, the combination of hemp pea and cranberry protein is supposed to form a complete protein. I got tested and was intolerant to dairy aswell. I'm just trying this option I may go back to whey if results are similar. I got the vanilla, bit of an acquired taste totally different to any powdered protein I've tried but i don't worry too much about the taste anyway

I just had my first serving of bulkpowders beef protein in chocolate peanut. Outstanding. And I'm getting that little hit of non dairy chocolate that I miss so much. Doubt there's a cheddar flavour out there....
