my parents have somehow got their hands on a Sky+ HD box (don't ask), model drx890c

The have a free to air system in the house, with one connection currently working off it (with a new saorview tv)
When the installer did the job I got him to run wiring to two other rooms in the house (genius, yes I know)

Will that Sky+ box suffice to receive the saorview channels on its own? (probably not, but it as worth a shot)
Or will I need a saorview tv with it?
will it receive the satellite channels on its own?

    thanks in advance

It will recieve the FTA satellite channels,,but not the saorview ones.

You can't get saorview via sky dish.

You will need an approved saorview set-top box for those channels with an aerial,,or maybe a set of "rabbits-ears".

What about Saorsat ? I think the box can pick up Saorsat.
See more info here, the problem is you are getting a very limited amout of programs.

    Ok.

So if I buy a saorview tv it will give me all the Irish channels, and then the sky+ box that I have will get the free to air satellite channels???

No, a Sky HD box is only good for the 28 east satellite channels, Saorsat is on 9e, different satellite

Is the $ky box, LNB & dish of no use for Saorsat ?

Fcek, I can see why it's very confusing for the general public to get their head around all the options !

No, 9E needs a bigger dish and a different type of LNB

Its not a Sky satellite dish

    its a freesat dish.
the parents already have a freesat box working off the satellite with a new saorview tv

I want to know if this Sky+ HD box will allow me to view these satellite channels if I set it up in another room.
    Cheers

It will. One UHF aerial feed for Saorview channels, and 1 satellite feed (you only need 2 feeds if recording, which an out-of-subscription Sky+/SkyHD+ box can't do) for the Sky box to watch the FTA channels (BBCs/C4/etc.).

No such thing as a freesat dish, 99.9% of lads who install freesat/fta systems use Sky dishes.

Simple answer is that the box once connected to a dish will pick up channels, however the EPG is stuck on the Irish one which blocks the majority of useful free stuff such as ITV etc.
Contact Setanta for a ftv card under the BAI scheme & when it arrives simply stick it into the box & viola you have the UK epg.

You are probably better off selling the box on adverts or donedeal & using the cash to put towards a combi box which picks up both UK (via the dish) & Irish (via aerial) tv.

A Sky box will not ever work with Saorsat. As said you would probably be better with a combo box.
