Posted for a friend of mine, its all changed since I did it myself. What are the procedures for starting to drive in ireland nowadays, is it theory test, then 12 lessons, then provisional licence (or learners permit or whatever its called these days!), then drive, then full licence?

What is the earliest a person can drive, what documents need to be achieved? Apologies for not having a clue, it was different in my day!

The theory test comes first. If you pass that you can get your provisional license and drive accompanied by an experienced driver (with L plates). After you get your provisional, you can do the 12 driving lessons and once they're completed you can apply for your driving test. If you pass the driving test, you can send away for your full license.

In addition to the above, you must be 17 to get a learner permit for a car, and you must hold the learner permit for a minimum of 6 months before you can sit your test.

Hi, Ive been told by my son that in order to learn to drive in Ireland he needs the following: (I quote)

in Ireland you take 12 min lessons
before you take test you have to have insurance on your own car for min 6 months
    incl car

he seems to think he has to OWN that car, ie he needs a car buying....i'm sure thats not correct but dont live over there anymore, could someone please confirm it for me? Sorry for my ignorance but as I say I dont live over there

No the person going for test/taking lessons does not need to own the car they are using, they only need to be insured for the car they are using. Many pupils will use the instructors car for their lesson then the test.
