What sort of debt are they in does anyone know?

Getting rid of the Lackabane course will surely help the situation

They've also increased green fees for 2013. €100 to play Killeen in the summer.

I really like the course but that's pretty steep!

How the hell did a club with such a large membership ( 2,000 members ) and massive green fee income get into such a mess ?

It must have the largest membership in the country and its not cheap .

Was it just a case of too many ideas of grandeur and pie in the sky plans seen at so many clubs during the "boom".

I would imagine the purchase of land and building of Lackabane, not to mention the reputed £1,000,000 to build the clubhouse there was what got them into the initial debt. Plus the cost of maintaining 2 clubhouses and maintaining 3 courses against a drop in green fee revenue cant have helped.
Luckily the sale of Lackabane will see the club erase its debts,
hopefully now with less staff to pay,1 course and 1 clubhouse less to maintain the club may start making money again soon.

This is very interesting and reminds me of "The Island" where they increased the green fees and also increased the throughput of visitors. Could it happen here or is it a disincentive?

Can't say the courses are in the best shape but to justify that sort of fee they would want to be spot on all the time. Is it just my memory playing tricks or were they in much better shape twenty years ago?

Societies were big income earners for Killarney over the years but that was when people would spend on food and in the bar afterwards and with the drink driving laws now it won't be happening any time soon.

Anybody know whether the driving range and short game area in Lackabane are staying open and what long term plans are afoot?
