Is my new HD 7950 faulty?

    Hi Guys,
I just received and built my new PC from hardwareversand.de

The graphcs card is Club 3D Radeon HD 7950 royalKing

The PC boots ok, but I get what looks like 8bit color graphics.
    Certianly not 32bit.
There are concentric bands of fine grain where there should be a smooth color gradient. The grain appears to shimmer like it was vibrating....

I've loaded all the drivers and still the same.

The Monitor is a catleat 27".

Just for a test I installed my old 8800GTX and it was perfect!!!

Anyone got any advice before I return this to hardwareversand.de

    thanks,
    Ray

did you get drivers from AMD.com?

what's it like in games? does a screenshot show the problem?

I loaded the driver that came with the Graphics card, it was on CD.

Here is a short video clip....

I have also tried the new card in my old PC and it's the same problem.

My old Video card in te new PC is also fine.

The problem moves with the new video card...

And the colours are all weird, very pink and red...

I starting to think it's faulty.

You've plugged in the molex to it - and tried reseating the card?

Tried different Diaplays, tried different PC's.
Reseated it twice... still the exact same.

I've sent the german team an email...

Does your card have a 2nd DVI-D output you could try to connect the monitor to? Sounds like a dodgy DVI connection. Another thing to try is if the card came with a displayport-DVI adapter, you could try connecting using this-may not work with the Catleap so try it with a 1080 monitor.

I,ve managed to hook up a normal VGA monitor and it looks perfect on the new Graphics card.

So the issue seems to be driving the dual-link DVI cable and monitor.

My older 8800GTX has no problem driving this monitor. So I still think the HD 7950 is faulty... right?

I would say the DVI cable is faulty from what you have said

ah forgot it was a catleap,

the DVI cable that came with mine is also dodgy as hell. if its not evenly screwed into the monitor and the GPU i also get those grains.

its not a problem once its properly set up for me. try fiddling with both connections.

But the same DVI cable works with the 8800GTX and Catleap...

I also get "grains" when the cable is not secure, but this is completely different. everything is washed out and crazy patterns can be seen.

I'll try a new cable, Maplin will probably charge me 25 Euro!!!

    What's you're psu?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 520 ✭✭✭trackerman

    PSU is Super-Flower Amazon 80Plus 550W
It has one GPU cable with two heads marked 'PCI Express' and 'SLI ready'.

    Should be fine so.

New cable, if its still bad rma.

Yea thats the best thing to do, but Maplin want 49 Euro for a Dual DVI.

Anyone near Dunboyne or Blanchardstown got a loan of a dual link DVI cable for a few hours?

€2 shop do em. Nothing spectacular but they work.

Managed to borrow a quality Dual Link DVI cable and it did not make any difference.
Once in a while the video card stops responding ! then windows 7 reports that it has recovered from an unexpected error.

    So it's RMA time.

Just received the ASUS HD7950-DC2T-3GD5 v2...

All i can say is NICE, beats the socke off the Club and at only 20 quid extra, it's well worth it.
Build like a tank, runs silent, and can OC to well over 1000MHz...
