Not for the 10 year one at €55 but if you have to get an annual one at €25 tis a tad pricey.

You'll be hanging onto it alright...
As all old paper licences are valid for a maximum of 10 years, so it follows that all old paper licences should be replaced with a plastic card licence by 2023 (i.e. Applications for replacement of a paper licence with a plastic card licence will not be accepted, unless that licence has expired).

They're saying that the new licence will only be issued to people who recently passed the test or are renewing an expired licence.

That seems to suggest that replacement licences will be in the old format.

The new licence will only be available to people who are:

    • applying for a new learner permit or full licence (having passed their driving test);
    • renewing their expired licence.

while €55 is not crazy for a 10 year license it is a €30 increase which is huge .. more back door stuff from our government again :(

They will replace them with new licenses. They just won't advertise the fact to avoid any glut of replacements.

Thats not the point, how can a plastic card cost the same as your cars NCT?

Donkeyboy veradker (sp?) mentions in that link that the service was "underfunded"
Surely thats why we pay tax etc etc to "fund" stuff.
I resent having to pay over the odds for things I've paid for already;)

I don't think so, the word will get out in double quick time and they'll be swamped with applications for replacements.

I don't see how they can claim one thing online and then implement a different policy which by it's nature will be public knowledge within days.

I have legitimately moved house and am meant to change the address on it, not sure if there's a legal compulsion mind. This has been free since the dawn of time - are they going to either keep a stack of pink paper for the next few years or make me pay?

I've always got "Is this still your address" from the Gardai....

Would you really bother changing it?

And remember if you hold a cat C/D licence it will only be valid for 5 years compared to someone holding a B licence for 10 years, As for the RSA some time ago I questioned them about the costs of the driver digi card and how come it costs €23 approx in the north compared to €50 here.
Mine is up for renewal in January might just have to renew it for ten years this side of xmas.

    No it's not happening.
From 19th January 2013 only new shape licences will be issued, no matter if it's renewal, adding category, replacement after theft or loss, either change of address.

In other thread few days ago, someone quoted an email from RSA in relation to that.

As far as I remember you can apply for licence renewal up to 3 months before renewal date - so yes - you can apply even today.

But you will get old paperstyle licence.

and you can also apply up to ten years after the licence expires!
I wonder how you'd stand on the basis of not handing in your old licence and keeping it an extra ten years :)

That's just a standard question they ask. They are looking for your reaction more than what you say.

So they can send fixed charge notices to the correct place, wouldn't want to get a summons.

You could do that, but you wouldn't be able to drive legally.

probably not and I wouldnt want to, but if you didnt need your licence for a period of time, you could hold off renewing it
on the other hand its convenient to have and the cost might go up again, in which case you'd be better off having it.

It was partly a joke though
Must be an Irish thing, did they look for inefficiencies and eliminate them or just jack up the prices?
Well, no, that'd be political suicide.

    ?
do you mean you think you will get a renewed licnence by changing your address cheaper?

Also, I wonder how this new system affects you, e.g. having a C licence, you now have to renew every 5 years, when it is on the same licence document as a 10 year B licence,

Are they (Clicence) also allowed to run up to 10 years from expiration and still be renewed??
As if you didnt need it, you could wait 5 years until renewing the B and then start again.

No sorry what I meant to say was change my address so I can get the new card licence even though my current licence is still valid, only have my licence 3 weeks actually.

Is it currently free to change address?

as it says changes to a licence from the 12th Jan 13 will be 35 euro

    it doesnt say address specifically

. Yes currently free. Doesn't say address no, but I'm sure you're right & there will be a fee:(. Didn't see it before

From a link in OP it says that it's going to be 35 euros for any to existing licence. (so that surely includes change of address, name, photo, etc).
Changes to existing Licences/Permits eg. new Category added/removed €35

    they have made it awkward
If you have a B licence and a C licence and your C now expires in 5 years and the B in 10, so in 5 years, if you need the C then you need to renew for how long? as there is not a category to renew for 5 years, even though you have paid for the renewal of the B for 10 already?, you are going to have to renew this also really??

I assume this is active only for licences issued after this and not a C licence issued and valid already?

    For another 5 years.
I actually think they might organise it, that if you hold C or D licence, than your B will be renewed also only for 5 years.
as there is not a category to renew for 5 years,
What do you mean by "there is not a category".
Renewal costs 55 euro, no matter if it's for 5 years or 10 years.

    Yes.

    Yes.
If you get your C licence today, and it's valid until Dec 2022, then it will stay valid until Dec 2022.

I might sound strange, but while I usually complain here on this forum about many things, but here I can't see anything wrong with those new licence rates.
55 euro every 10 years for average person is not a fortune.
35 for any amendments or duplicates also seem good price.
I prefer paying 55 every 5 years for a nice piece of plastic, than 710 euro in motortax, for a ****ty piece of paper so-called tax disc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭pippip

Not too bad, also considering they had never increased the price since 2001.

They could have tried milking us way before now if they wanted.

Exactly. Its about 2 cent a day. People need to get a grip in this country. Cue the save a penny earn a pound brigade. Over ten years, I'm pretty sure you'd lose more than €55 in more non-economical, stupid ways. Its an investment, if you can't afford it (Like tax or insurance) you shouldn't be driving.

Considering the price has jumped up by 100% yet in the UK to renew the licence costs £20 every 10 years, And as someone who uses company ID cards with swipe access along with other details it does not cost the company €55.

It costs something like €300 to change a light bulb in St. James Hospital, by the time you absorb the cost off staff etc etc. The card itself probably costs at most €2 to print. The overhead is of course the chronically inefficient Irish public service system.

On the UK example, thats about €25 but they'd easily have three times to revenue stream given the amount of people renewing versus similar cost to ours for actually printing / admin so its not a realistic comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,554 ✭✭✭donkey balls

I have to say I've never had a problem with the staff employed in the motor tax office while dealing with them, Ok it was a pain in the arse when the only place to renew your licence was chancery house beside the four courts with the ling wait.
But many a time they could issue you with a driver's licence on the same day if you were stuck I.e going abroad for work and you needed a duplicate licence.
Everyone is saying that it's only €55 for 10 years and breaking down the costs per day, It wasn't long ago when people would not question the prices of goods and services and just went along with the prices being charged.

How is that even possible? Everytime I've been in one of those offices there's been a queue of people waiting to hand over €15/€25 in exchange for a laminated piece of green/pink paper.
