What has AH improved?

Has AH improved anything in society?

Just looking around the threads in existence and one's from the past a thought came to mind.

Other than the SFF and the help it provides has AH ever achieved anything. There are some good, controversial and thought provoking threads that appear from time to time.

These threads are interesting and contain some great ideas and some opinions and ideals that would probably never crossed my mind. There are lots of posts, lots of argument lots of bandwidth used and of course lots of hits on the site.

My question is with all the view points, the strength of opinion from all sides of an argument, has AH ever actually achieved something worthwhile, something tangible that has instigated or forced change in some aspect of society?

Is there any examples to be seen of this or is it just really a place to mouth off and (myself included) crack the odd joke. Is there enough of a feeling in the ever growing number of patrons of AH to actually create something positive?

It provides a much needed outlet for social retards to vent their crackpot theories and views. Without this pressure release mechanism I'd imagine there would be weekly instances of gun massacres across the country.

Does AH really need to have a broader social mission? I think people may gain new perspective on an individual level, and that is perhaps an unintended (positive) spillover effect of the forum. Off the top of my head, the threads on depression and transgender people have been both amazingly civil and informative.

This is pretty much what I expected. That's a positive. You are right of course everyone needs somewhere to hide from time to time. At least here they are doing it pre-massacre as oppose to post-massacre.

On the individual level I would agree, I have had my opinion on matters changed, broadened, and confirmed in my time in AH.

The broad social mission not really needed but as it expands I was just wondering about a collective response to an issue that may affect a large portion of users. I guess in could be renamed to Apathy Hours.

There was a collective response across the website, not just AH, in regards to the SOPA legislation (which is certainly relevant to many of this site's users), and many AH regulars were not only involved in that discussion, but contacted their representatives.

That said, I think the 'Apathy Hours' label is kind of silly given that people don't come here to plan a revolution, but rather for a laugh and a chat.

Yes I remember that, it showed a great collective response.

    Me'h :)

I know you are right it is just a laugh and a chat but some of the threads can get very constructive discussion but it just seems to me to be really just a waste of time when after logging off it is forgotten. I am not saying it is a foundation for revolution but with so many like-minded people in one place could the energy be garnered into something positive?

AH has given me the insight to admire those who I disagree with.

    The cunts.

It keeps the AH mods voluntarily confined to their bedrooms and bedsits.

On a serious note (for a change), for me anyway:
-AH has many a time been a place where I found out about international and Irish news (both serious and funny).
-It's given me a genuine insight from a great variety of people on topics across the board.
-The fact that it's casual has meant many a laugh has been had at chancers and messers. A lot of the time this atmosphere has meant that troubling issues were able to be lightened and I logged off feeling a little bit better about things that might have troubled me had I faced them alone (the Budget is an example of this).
-It's very pleasant to be able to speak casually and act the fool with other people and be able to bring up your own topics or peruse the madness of others!
