Skerries & Rush Fibre Broadband Delay..........Do you want it?

Eircom have announced that they will now not upgrade Skerries & Rush to fibre broadband until phase 4 of the upgrade. That is currently scheduled for December 2013.

    http://pressroom.eircom.net/press_releases/article/eircom_Announces_Full_Year_Results_30_June_2012_/

As UPC are not in either area yet, but have recently switched on fast broadband in Lusk & Balbriggan, my question is:

If fast fibre broadband was a possibility, would you want and use it?

Please have a look at the poll and vote

If we get enough people using tis we can pass these results to eircom & UPC, and it could influence their decision and maybe cable us up ahead of time.

If UPC or Eircom offered Tv, Broadband & Phone in a bundle, would you sign up now? 49 votes

It would be amazing if UPC was rolled out!! Speeds are the best out there.

UPC are not coming anywhere they haven't cabled already ( unless they are nearby and the estate is ducted) . If you are on an MMDS fed cable they should be there within a year and a half.

I have tried most broadband providers, and only Eircom and 3G will provide service in Skerries. I am paying nearly €40 for between 2 - 3mb download! Other places pay the same for 10 times the download speeds. So PLEASE come and offer better competition.

The sooner these loo-laas get out of the way then and let Sky or someone in the better . No history of excellence or quality in this country . These upgrades should've been planned years ago !

Nobody is going to buy eircom, as in NOBODY! Phase 4 of the Fibre Program is at risk of being shifted back to Q1 2014 from what I can make out.

I'm moving to Skerries soon. currently have UPC so will be sad to leave them behind.

So who's the best of the rest? Not a fan of Eircom and their 3 strikes malarky.

    3 strikes for what?

Decent Broadband will never arrive in north county dublin ever! if UPC are in the area already they can provide semi-good speeds, but eircom are never going to upgrade the likes of Skerries, Lusk or Rush, otherwise their own sales people would tell

    Such a shame s_dev.

Can you recommend the best of the worst?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 s_dev

Well if you can't get UPC, then the cheapest is getting a dongle and connectiong a wi-fi router(I pay ten euro per month with O2), the speed is complete **** but it's cheaper than paying eircom for the same speed.
On the brighter side if you want to watch anything on youtube you have time to make yourself a cup of tea

Skerries and Rush (the URBAN BITS) will get VDSL in late 2013 or early 2014. The rural and village areas served by those two exchanges will get nothing, eg along the R127.

If you are very lucky you will see KN pulling fibre as early as April 2013 in Skerries Lusk and Rush which are phased together.

Does anyone know if a plan or map available from the gov saying what will be completed this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,565 ✭✭✭quad_red

    Any update on this?

    We're considering moving to Skerries.

Going from 50mb fibre UPC to 2mb crapola Eircom would have serious work and personal implications for us.

The OH lives in skerries, 15Mb down. Few hundred meters from the cabinet.

    Cheers ED E.

Do you know where the cabinets are? Is there a map showing it? Looking at a few houses in the Kelly's Bay area.

    Cheers, Quad

edit: just spotted the crowd sourced map in the sticky at the top of the forum. There appears to be two cabinets in the estate.

There is a new VDSL cab 100 meters from me in Kenure in Rush. I had an engineer out last week who said although it may not be officially announced as part of the May rollout, fibre will be rolled out in Rush in the next few months. He registered me when he was on to the back office when fixing my existing faulty line.

I've seen Eircom putting down cables on the road parallel to the train line - heading down to Skerries Point. I was told by a friend this is the new ericom lines. I am out of contract with Imagine right now (fairly stable internet connection - max of 2.5MB download, BRUTAL accounts and support) I was looking at moving to someone else but do not want to do that if there is a chance these lines and better speeds arrive in the next couple of months. Any ideas on updates to when better lines are due?

Thats them laying fibre most likely. Current time frame is some time next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭Craven99

So probably not worth keeping with my current provider I'd say. I'd be best off just getting a cheaper deal for now and upgrading when the fiber is in and able to provide more speed.

    Cheers

It's available now if you sign up with Eircom, go to their website and enter your details. I live on Holmpatrick, near the rugby club and Eircom have confirmed i can get upto 70mb right away.

I'm currently with Vodafone for my home broadband and they are offering me the same but for less money than Eircom....guess which one i will be choosing :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭Craven99

Thanks dubcartel - I'll check that out today

I'm currently in Donabate village and no sign of any sort of reliable Fibre, so wouldn't hold my breathe for surrounding areas of Fingal not already serviced : /

A bit of an update - had an Eircom rep out with me on Friday. Fiber is now available in my area. I was told I can expect speeds of up to 70mb. The offer was an initial 6 months for €30 a month and €45 thereafter

We're in Kelly's Bay. Absolute max I've seen (wired) is around 54mbps.

So I suppose if you're closer to the cabinet you might get closer to 70.

I'm in the centre of Skerries. Anybody know if fibre is available yet near the Monument?

Run your number on the eircom site.

Ran a skerries rock number, available now it seems.

Thanks, I tried that but it just came up with a message that it couldn't establish whether I was fibre enabled or not?

If Eircom doesn't know then how can I know.

Give them a buzz, the sales team will be able to check your address.

I got the sales pitch from the eircom changeover team and was told I would be the first on the long list to be upgraded to 7gb when it arrived and they would also lower my bill. I did explain that at 50 euro a month with Vodafone I was happy and that it was eircoms crappy copper cable entering my house not Vodafone's that was causing my rubbish internet speed. Any way I signed up and got a bil for nearly 800 euros, after weeks on the phone to the most ignorant people I have ever talked to I found out that I had not been signed up for after 6.00 and weekend calls that I had signed for, and they reimbursed me something like 126 euros. so now I only owe 700 euros. next I was just UNLUCKY.... as eircom bill for two months ahead on their broadband. I signed say on the 30th of April so had been charged for the previous two months...that I was with Vodafone with and the next 2 months,,, that I had not even used yet? Any way I do not want to go on and on, my wife worked for eircom for 20 years and I wanted to go back and hopefully get a good deal but from 50 euro to 790 euro is not a saving though . I immediately switched back to Vodafone the day I got the bill and also got a penalty from eircom for doing this. I stopped short at the court appearance to pay the outstanding amount of 260 euro's. Not a nightmare others should have to replicate. I had a complaint in with COMREG and an complaint number etc, but to this day have never heard from them. My internet speed is 0.18.............

    I don't really understand what you're saying.

You signed up for Eircom fibre and they charged you 800 euro for two months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

Sounds like he early terminated and got hit with the early cease charge(which is most of the price of the full term, 18*50=900). GJ.

    Hi,
NO I did not sign up for fibre, there is none where I live,
I switched providers from Vodafone to eircom, (Eircom called at the door)
My bill was 48- 50 euros a month and the eircom guy said it would come down to around 45 euro.
This I was not bothered about but thye did dangle the carrot of WHEN fibre came down the street I would get it.
28 days later my bill was just short of 800 euros, for what I already had. phone and broadband at 1 mb... which is actually 0.18 to 0.50 and free calls evenings and weekend etc.

Stupid thing to do I know and I will never change again.
