I installed a technomate 5200 usb satellite reciever for a neighbour of mine who got rid of sky.He uses this for free to air channels. He connected a 320 GB intenso external hard drive to the technomate as he records different sports ,this worked fine for a while but now the usb drive has started clicking and a message appears om screen saying no drive is detected. I have tried the drive on different boxs and it works fine .It is formated to fat 32.

I am not an expert in these things and this neighbour has my head wrecked, I am wondering would anybody here have any idea what the problem might be?

I personally found the TM5200d very unreliable for recording, the 5200super is a better build and had the fast forward and rewind functions.

Make sure u have the latest software installed on the box...u can upgrade it via usb.... u can get it here..

    http://www.technomate.com/support/satellite-and-terrestrial/

Make sure u pick the rite one...i.e the 5200 and 5200 super are different, also Im sure there was a technomate own formatter for hard drives..u mite find it on there site..

Sounds like the drive isn't getting enough power from the 5200. Is it USB powered only, or can you use an external PSU also? Give it a try if you can.

its usb powered only.where would be a good place to buy a drive a that has its own psu or would a better box be cheaper?

Ive had similar problems with a TM6900 ive in the bedroom. Found they need to have a powered drive (Not self powered from usb), also i had the clicking problem on another drive and found it to be the usb cable was faulty.

There's no guarantee that the drive would work with a better box. Try snaps suggestion of changing the USB lead first.

The cheapest option would be to get a drive enclosure, and swap the HDD over, but it mightn't be easy to open the current drive, plus it's not your own.

Cheapest place for a new drive would probably be from Amazon, or elsewhere online. You might want to stay away from anything over 500gb or so, do a few searches to see what other people have working with this box, eg

I have looked at alot of drives online, alot of them are only usb powered. I wonder would anybody be able to recommend a drive that they have used with this type of box.

I've had a WD My Passport working on a 5400 super and a 6900 super no issues whatsoever. They are very compact not like some of the clumpy desktop hdd's around. Never needed additional power supply with these.
